This has been discussed before -- search "pods".
Unless you're a slave to fashion, it's a generally bad idea for CV carburetors because pods result in turbulent airflow through the carb, which plays havoc with their functioning. Air boxes provide more laminar airflow, and the bigger the better -- probably why XII have two.

Thank you for the replies, trying to get this bike back in running shape after sitting for three years, really just tired of pullin this air box in and out. I will need to buy 4 new tubes from box to carb and it may become easier as these are hard as a rock with no flexibility left.

You can get the carbs out without removing the airbox. But that requires getting mad at the boots and manhandling them.
The boots on the other side ("intake manifold") often crack and cause mayhem. This can be hard to detect. These thicker boots can be pricy.
Anything on these bikes made of rubber is now "of a certain age".

I was kinda toying with the idea of splitting the air box somehow so it comes out as separate pieces - but really the easiest way to take it out is to split the frame and pull the fuel tank - and it's then easier - (I'm only half kidding)
I find that it's so easy to get the boots installed "wrong" - not actually sealing - THREE of mine were not on right when i pulled mine apart - couldn't see or reach them with the gas tank in...
But air pods - NOT easy to get tuned to run decent

Somewhere on here someone has softened the boots between the air box and the carbs. It can be done and there are lots of different ways to accomplish this. One of the chemicals used is wintergreen oil mixed with another product. Some heating also helps during the softening process. Next time my carbs come off I will trying one of the many techniques.
