Cam Chain Tensioner Leak

Post by Bill52 »

Does anyone know if the cam chain tensioner assembly can be removed without having to redo the cam timing. It appears that the leak I fixed by slapping gasket goop around it is starting again, so it appears I will have to remove it. I have done this on a Vulcan but am not sure about the voyager,Carl Leo, any tips?

the tensioner can be removed without disturbing the cam timing, once removed do not turn the engine over. the tensioner is sealed with an O ring. be sure to reload the tensioner assy when you reinstall it.

One last question can it come out without removing the engine from the frame or removing the carbs? It looks like I can get the bolts off just not sure how much room I need to remove it.

the engine does not need to be removed, i take the carbs off to give enough room to reload the assy on reassembly.

I have had what I thought was a valve noise, come and go. An experienced motorcycle mechanic heard it once and said that's your "timing chain tensioner". I assume the cam chain tensioner is the same thing. I am interested in more info on this. Do you think this is something that would "rattle" some of the time and not others? I can go 500miles with no noise, run 100 with noise, then 500 again with none.
