California 21 Missions Run

Post by jebsoe »

Hello to all riders,
I have been trying to to this for a couple of years now, so I finally map-quested the 21 Missions out. The 21 Missions run the complete length of the California Coast or as I say it "THE LEFT COAST".
The run is broken down into 5 legs. This is because I have 3 days off a week (Sun - Tues) andwill be using those days to make my run. I will be starting and stopping each leg from Barstow, Ca. Yeah I said Barstow, Ca. Iwould like to invite any and all riders, cagers, etc... to make the trip and link up at one or more of these places. The route is going to be Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) as much as possible and the I-5 when needed. The terrian will be ever changing as you travel this route either South to North which I am doing or vise-versa. Also included in this travel is the Hearst Castle, Fort Ord, which is now a Univesity of California College campus butis still used for urban warfare training and South Lake Tahoe.

The 21 Missions from Southto North are: San Diego de Alcala, San Luis Rey de Francis, San Juan Capistrano, San Gabriel Arcangle, San Fernando Rey de Espuma, San Buenaventura, Santa Barbara, Santa Ines, La Purmisima Concepcion, SanLuis Obispo de Tolosa, San Miguel Arcangle, San Antonio de Padua, Nuestra Senora de la Soledad, San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo, San Juan Bautista, Santa Cruz Santa Clara de Asis, San Jose, San Francisco de Asis, San Rafael Arcangle, and San Francisco Solano.

Leg 1 : 5 Missions--San Diego, Oceanside, San Juan Capistrano, San Gabriel, and Mission Hills.
Leg 2 : 5 Missions--Ventura, Santa Barbara, Solvang, Lompoc, and San Luis Obispo.
Leg 3 : 3 Missions--Hearst Castle, San Miguel, Jolon,and Soledad.
Leg 4 : 3 Missions--Fort Ord, Carmel, San Juan Batista and Santa Cruz.
Leg 5 : 5 Missions--Santa Clara, Fremont, San Francisco, San Rafael, and Sonoma then to South Lake Tahoe.

I am doing Leg 1 on September 16 - 18, 2010 and Leg 2 on October 14 - 17, 2010. The rest of the Legs will be Spring/Summer of 2013, 2014 etc.. As I can AFFORD THEM.

I will be riding a 2010 Voyager Silver/Blue.

If anybody is interested in riding/meeting along the Legs just let me know or just show up. If you make any part of the trip before I do PLEASE send road conditions to me.

CONTACT : James "JEBSOE" Bledsoe at jim.bledsoe@roadrunner.com
Maybe this qualifies for Passport points if that is still available. I tried to go to the site but it would not open.

Thanks to all and RIDE SAFE AND SANE.

Those should be great rides. I've ridden Hwy 1 from Morro Bay north to it's terminus at Hwy 101, then 101 up into Oregon. Still on my bucket list is the southern portion of Hwy 1 I haven't ridden. OK, I didn't do the missions but that would be interesting. Keep us posted and if timing works out I'll see if I can join you for one of your legs next Spring!

I would like to ride these legs with you. I live in Northern California, Half Moon Bay. Your second leg, I'll be at the Ripley, TN ride in, I'll be coming home via Barstow. This will be Oct 16 or 17 maybe we can meet at a Coffee Shop. Keep me posted when you plan the dates for leg 3, 4, and 5. Would it be ok with you if I add your name to the NorCal Voyagers Club guests, and you can receive our monthly newsletter. Also Tom Chitwood from the L. A. Area is near you.

Hope you become an AVA member, then you'll get a membership roster, this way you'll be able to contact lots more members.

Hi Don,

I am a member (#6066) and yes you may add my name to your guest list. Give me a call @ 760 927 5934 (Cell) and let me know when you hit Barstow and we can meet at Starbucks or something.

I am waiting for May - June time frame to do the Carmel Fort Ord portion because my Army buddy and his wife want to make that ride. She retires in April from White Sands and they want to trailer to my place and ride at least that leg.

Thanks for ypur reply Don and hope to meet up with you soon.

By "passport" do you mean "see the USA with the AVA"? If so, then no. Not enough participated to make it cost effective with the prizes and all. Too bad, a lot of "points" could have been had at the AVA rally in Kanab this year! :gig:

Cool Duane

How were the road conditions? Did you do PCH or I-5? The roads up North in good shape going through Solvang etc...?

Got to take the ride into the shop tomorrow - just hit 10,000 and only got it in Feb with 0 - well that is what and why I got it for is to RIDE not GARAGE it (like HARLEYS) 2010 Kaw Voyager

Jim

Just got back from the Wallowa Lake ride in. The roads in along the pacific or PCH are all wonderful, made for the Voyager 1700. Some of the county roads will work the suspensen on the motorcycle but all are in good shape.

Looking forward to riding with you soon.

Hey Don,

The road conditions sound awesome as did your ride.

Right now I am sitting on MAUI. Tommorow my son and I are going to rent some Motorcycles (Harley's probably) and do a ride around the island. Should be fun. I will be back in time to do the first leg of the mission run on Sept 16th. Hope to catch you at one of the sites or in Barstow if you make it there.

RIDE SAFE BROTHER

Well on the 25th of Nov I finally set out todo Leg1 of my Missions Run. Went to San Diego and stopped at the Mission. It is a very beautiful place, a must visit. Left there to go to Oceanside Mission. I missed the exit so I said I would just go to San Juan Capistrano Mission. However before I could make the exit to San Juan, a car came off an on ramp and cut me off. The driver kept going and so did I. 70mph on the pavement, sliding, tumbling, rolling for 500 feet. Dont know what lane I ended up in but I did not get hit by any other vehicles. The bike went another 500 feet beyond me and crossed all lane of I-5 (6 lanes I think) and it hit the center divider, also it was not hit by anything else. The first person to come to my aid was an ex EMT. The 5th person was a Doctor. My injuries were actually very minor as to what they could have been. Broken/dislocated/sergicaly repaired left ankle, broken right wrist, broken left collar bone, 10 broken ribs an the left side and three small arears of minor road rash on my elbows and left forearm. I am now at home under the wonderful care of my wife and family. I would like to take this time to wish all at AKA a MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Wow Jebsoe! So sorry to hear this, and am very glad it did not turn out worse for you. Did anyone chase down the driver who cut you off?

Glad you are able to be home with your family for Christmas. You have a lot to be thankful for.

Will you be getting back on a bike? Do you have any photos to share?

My wife and I are in discussion stage of a run along the coast this early summer (1st of June ish).
We would ride over from Phoenix to San Diego and then work our way up the coast as close to the ocean as possible.
The missions would be great to include (we have been to one near Lompoc before, but was at least 10 years ago. At that time we lived in Santa Maria, CA, but were bikeless at that time (traded my bike to a brother for my daughter to have a car - yeah).
I want to take at least a week, maybe two to run all the way to Washington state, then back via Idaho then on to Colorado for meetings the end of June. After trying tents again this last summer, not going to do that unless we pop for a tent trailer (really liked Jim's).
Pray you will be all healed up by then and can meet up somewhere. Of course, same to all who would like to as we progress along the coast.
Enjoy, :wnk2:
ken

PS. Afraid that if we do it for that long, it will not allow for a run to Ohio, but still hoping. :cry2:
