Spark Plug Wire Replacement

Post by starrider »

Anyone have tips on replacing spark plug wires on a Voyager XII? I can see the coils, but haven't found a way to get to the wire on the coil end short of pulling the radiator.

No real easy way, they are a pia to get at. Usually it is enough to just clip the spark plug ends about a 1/2" to get rid of corrosion, but changing the whole wire not to many have been done that I know of. But as old as some of them are now it is probably going to have to be done ..

This topic was of interest to me way back in 2005. Fritz provided the following response to a question about plug wires: " I would NOT reccomend using ANY type of suppression wire. You will create problems you DO NOT want. ACCEL wires are good I use them all the time when I change out the Voyager wires for aftermarket. However,,, I recommend using ACCEL #3008 wires. You must use a solid core wire. The ACCEL #3008 wires have a tinned copper core wire. If you use a suppressor type wire, they will not last very long and you could very easy burn out your coils. Your spark plugs should be a suppressor type and that is all you need. PLUS most of your 8mm wires will not fit into the 7mm spark plug boots. ALSO, unless your stock plug wires are hard and cracked or leaking, they should last a very long time. Most of the time you will only need to cut off a 1/4" or so from the boot end of the wire and screw the boots back on." Maybe Fritz could answer your question as to the best way to get to the coils? Anyone hear from him anymore?

Thank you for the responses. For now I guess I'll replace the one poor looking boot and nip the end of the wire.

Several months ago I had an electrical problem that I thought was a coil. It took the better part of a day and I all but lost my religion. Simply running the coil wires was a PITA. The coils are really difficult to get in and out. I really agree with the rest of the posts. Snip the ends if it is at all possible and save youself a lot of pain :bat: .........Gator Mike

I'm pretty sure that you either have to remove the radiator or remove all of the fairing - including the inner fairing. I had a cold weather coolant leak to address, so I went the radiator removal route - sometimes known as the RRR :gig: I sent you a PM.
