Wore the rear tire flat out in less than 50 miles

Post by gearheadfla »

Ok, so it really took 6000 miles to get it to where this story starts, my Nomad had a brand new Dunlop E-3 radial on it when I bought it in late April, Last Saturday I was cleaning the bike and checked the tires, said to myself, time to buy a new tire, had a charity event to do the next day and I would be fine for that, just a short local ride, did it and came home, like I said less than 50 miles even with the lunch run we made, got home and parked the bike, glance at the tire and HOLY **** I bet it would not have gone another 5 miles. It went from, "Looks like it's time for a tire" to "I NEED A TIRE NOW!!!!!!!! just that quick. The point of this story is PLEASE KEEP A EYE ON YOUR TIRES, they wear quick once they get to a point.

Never did like the way this tire was wearing from the start. And for those of you that know me, YES I am going Darkside with the Nomad also, got the tire today and will mount it tomorrow. In the meantime, I rode Lori's 250 Rebel to work today, that was.....well....different. :gig:

The Nomad calls for a bias ply. No wonder that radial had a strange wear pattern.

Yeah I know, but it was on it when I bought it, I knew from day one I would be replacing it with a car tire as soon as it wore out, just amazed me the little bit of time it took to show the threads like that.

It is a fun little bike to ride, you gotta hammer it pretty hard to stay up with traffic, twisting the throttle and slamming gears. Do that on the XII or Nomad you would be in the next county before you knew it. :gig:

I had the same experience with a 404 Dunlop on the front of my VXII. (I had to buy the 404 because there were no E-3's available before I left on a long ride.) The 404 wore strangely from the start. It had only been on for about a year (and not many miles--maybe 6000). I inspected the bike before a fall trip into Texas and thought "I'll have to replace this tire pretty soon after this trip." The day I started home, I wasn't sure it would make it all the way. As it turned out, a horrendous cold front blew in with cold rain. The rain was heavy enough the job we were on before I left was shut down. It allowed my brother to hook on to the trailer and meet me at the state line. I'm still not sure if the tire would have made it...

Jim (Gearhead) I just had the same sitiuation I have been looking for a front tire for my wing and no one had any but it was getting real bad (Metzler! ugh!! was on it when I bought it) anyway yesterday we were on our breakfast run and it was really bugging me, because after HALF of tread is gone, the rest of the tire will wear TWICE as fast as the first half!! YAALL BETTER KNOW THAT!! Anyway the restaurant we went to has Great Cycle shop right behind it and they had the tire and I went home and ripped it off the bike and the owner put the new tire on with beads and new valve and I am a happi rider now!!!! as I just went Darkside with the rear with a Michelin Alpin Primacy za3 m&s RUNFLAT (just like Nascar!!) With that combo now that wing rides almost as good as a XII. :wnk2: The story is longer, so I will pm you..

Your probably right about that Mr. Jensee, but in the mean time I took care of that problem last night, looking forward to the next 30 to 40k before I have to replace that tire again, now just to remember to service the spline once a year.
