Suggestions?

Post by kehoffman »

I really appreciated the quick answers to my first question.
Now I am wondering if anyone has successfully mounted a Wolo BadBoy horn?
I don't really want to pull the whole fairing off but so far I haven't figured out where it will fit.
This is one of 2 mods I want to do. The other is going a bit better - that is 2 30 watt Eclypse HID lights mounted on the front crash bars. I also found out it is not a good idea to try to run the wires between the exhaust headers and the radiator!
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Hi Keith, and welcome to the forum.

I have owned 3 Voyager 1200's over the years, the horns were one of the first modifications I did. I had a wolo for a couple of years...till it died. There is plenty of room under the lower fairings, which are not much trouble to remove, for the replacement horns. One thing for certain, you must use a horn relay, the wiring on the bike is just not big enough to accommodate any horns, other than stock.

Keith, I too have used the wolo bad boy horns. I had one mounted on each side of my '86 when I owned that bike. Real good upgrade for the horns. And as Tom stated you must use a relay for the horn. As of now on my '96 I have some Wolo extreme trumpets mounted, also using a relay.

Thanks for your comments. I didn't think it looked like there is enough room under the lowers. I will take another look this weekend. How did either of you mount them?

While I have the floor, I saw somewhere a reference to a "heavy duty" chrome towel bar which could be used for spill bar reinforcement. My home centers have .75" bars and 1.25" bars but I have not been able to find a 1". Suggestions on source(s)?

I also saw someone made a reference to his "Geezer Glider". I like that and hope it's OK if I steal the phrase. It sounds a little more "genteel" than "curmudgeon carrier"!

I'd use some of those smilies but I can't figure out how to insert them! :(

When you are in the edit mode posting a reply, place the cursor where you want the smilie and then just click on the smilie you want! You will see the text version printed between two colons, something like (for the smilie below):

Code: Select all

I don't know what brand of horns I have installed (PO installed them & painted to match the bike) but I like them. There is one on each side under the lower fairing.

How did either of you mount them?

Keith, It's been so long since I've had my '86 with the Wolo Bad boys on it that I don't remember in detail how I mounted them but I do remember using a piece of flat metal stock about 1X3 1/2 inches (thin metal)with a hole drilled in each end for the mounting bracket thus allowing me to bend the mount for proper location of the horn. Hope this helps somewhat.

The only problem with a mount like this is it directs the sound down and back instead of forward.
The person in front of you will only #1 his pants instead of the #2 you were hoping for.

:gig: :gig: :gig: But you have a point!

To really fix this means not only pointing the horns forward but also getting the "mouth" out from behind a fairing piece. :hmm:

Just a hint..
Dont forget the alternator is only rated at 35 amps..
Total of 420 Watts can be drawn..
Its close as stock with little overhead.. While the horns arent a problem with a relay and connecting them directly to the battery. Extra lighting may/will put a drain on the system..
Sooo.. Time to also consider LED running and tail lights and markers...

Cheers..
