What's Your Hobby?

Post by voyager55 »

Probably been asked before, but I'm old and can't remember - so no complaining
What does everyone do for a hobby besides bikes??

For me my German Shorthair Pointer keeps me busy in the woods. I love walking & hiking.
Collect coins. And I'm thinking of trying metal detecting this year.
Also enjoy Home Theater. Got a CRT Projector & a 100" screen.

Mostly music (guitar, harmonica and vocals).
Computer next - now i see why I need to loose weight - more walking in the woods would be great, but I live in the desert now. :gig:
Oh yah, we have a dog. Well in spite of what he thinks he is, Harley is a Rat Terrier type of dog. Only thing is he is also getting old and at 17 1/2, sleeping and eating while on his way to another nap doesn't allow for any walking much. Actually he has always been more of a hurry up and then dawdle at every smell along the way (so not much exercise for us). :wnk2:

When not tinkering with a bike, I build models, highly detailed model cars, use to do mostly NASCAR but when NASCAR raised the price for the model company's right to manufacturer them they all stopped. It's getting harder to get good kits now, looks like it's a dying hobby as kids today would much rather set in front of a computer and play games, no imagination anymore. You can't find good kits in most stores anymore.

Can't find bad kits in the stores, LOL. I used to do model cars. Haven't finished one in 14 years. Once we got married and a house, I spend most of my spare time in the garage. Bikes and cars.

That's what I used to do. It started in high school, then I was getting really good at it at MOS school, doing one every weekend. Mostly Nascar, but the 70 Buick GSX I had to do three times before I finally got it "perfect". Had a red and white 53 Chevy done that a Captain left a post-it note beside "claiming" it when I was done with school. Ricky Rudd's 26 Quaker State Buick, Ernie Irvan's 4 Kodak Oldsmobile, etc. etc. all ended up in a dumpster when I left. I wish I would have kept them all now.

Started back up in El Toro, and had shelves of them. Lost a couple (Mark Martin's 9 Folgers T-bird and Tim Richmond's 25 Folgers Monte Carlo) during a small quake when they rolled off the shelf and met their fate. Didn't have that problem in Iowa or North Carolina.

Paint jobs were simpler then, didn't do any airbrushing. Monte Carlo SSs were my favorite, but did them all. I really regret throwing all of them away now, but they probably wouldn't have survived the moves and kids anyway.

Edited to add I NEVER did a Jeff Gordon model. Ever.

After I got out of the Marine Corps in 93' I started to re-collect my album collection that I sold off in the 80's (damn the cd). I have been collecting ever since and have been into collecting blues and live albums mostly the last few years always on the hunt for some great rare gems. I cleaned out my album collection last year and gave them and a minty Philips 212 TT to my bored brother who retired to young. I now have about 800 LP's after the clean out with many of them being very to semi collectable with a spattering of 180g audiophile pressings. If you like music and enjoy listening to it the way it was intended to be listened to (analog) then this could be a hobby worth taking up. The one thing I like about it is that most LP's can be had for a couple bucks. My latest find was a copy of Dire Straits, On Every Street. I had this on tape while in the MC and played it all the time. Well record company never sold the vinyl version in the US so it is very unlikely to find a copy here. Thanks to ebay I was able to find one in Germany that was in mint condition for $30. Sometimes you have to pay a little more for hard to find vinyl. Overall it still averages out to a few dollars a piece.

To go along with my vinyl hobby I also collect solid state hifi gear from the 70's. I have some great receivers (the heavy type, Harman Kardon, Pioneer & Philips Labs), a couple nice TT's and also a few sets of speakers with the newest set being a dingy (VGC CL find) rare pair of Sonab speakers from Norway that Stig Carlsson designed. This guy was the master speaker designer with his 50's designs still in being used today. Well I cleaned these these babies up and have been diggin' the sound. For those who may be interested, the model is Sonab OA-14.

Famous picture of Johnny Cash with Carlsson speaker in background.

So along with working on and riding my bikes, music festivals, concerts, camping, traveling (staying at McMenamins properties. For those in the NW if you haven't you should), farmers markets & garage sales, movies and working on the house and of course my construction business I stay fairly busy trying to complete my wife's honey-do list.

Just living life and taking in all that comes my way.

Life is my hobby!

My hobby besides riding :hpdc: is photography, working on the 1968 Chevelle Malibu with my special needs son who is 16 years old and is already wanting to drive the car. I love camping and working on improving the rental property and our personal home. I also love to bbq. In my spare time I like to see and spend time with the grandkids. :woohoo:

What model of Triumph? Love Triumph's! My next door neighbor has about 8 of them. 4 GT6's and 4 Spitfires, 2 nice runners, one of each model and 4 restos.

I love horses too. My dad owned thoroughbreds back in the 70's. I would fly down to Bay Meadows with my dad to watch the races. Great times back then. Not much of a rider though, had an Arabian quarter horse try to kill me by running under a low branch of a giant oak. For sure it really would have killed me if I hadn't ducked in time.

My wife thinks my hobby is eating, at least that is what my waist line will tell you. After that comes drumming, both playing and instructing. I teach part time at home and also instruct the drum line at the local high school during marching band season.
I was a musician in the Marine Corps and had a commanding officer who also understood my passion for motorcycling. I would travel often by motorcycle and meet the band at what ever town we were performing in. This is also when I became a big Voyager XII fan. I got an 86 that was the Demo bike for Orange County Kawasaki in California.

Well that a tough one to answer .... I consider my work as my hobby . The work I do as a mechanic, fabricator, machine programmer ,machine repair, woodworker, and on and on keep me well amused... Most of the work I do is all one off items for museums and interactive displays, with some retail store display proto-types. I guess designing metal work art items are my passion. But I also like to work in electronics, so just keeping things working and building new things would be my hobby. But nothing can compare to just getting out on the open road and riding my voyager...

The hobbies I enjoy, beside riding my VXII ,are working with antique tractors, and playing trumpet in our local community band. The house we lived in before it burned in 1997,had a 15' by 15' room ,I had a turned into an HO scale model train room.I enjoyed that as a winter hobby, but the newer house does not offer an easy room to use for that purpose.

Mostly riding. Photography, home projects and improvements. I have a small collection for long and hand guns. Mostly old WWII stuff. I like reloading for them because ammo has gone ballistic (pun intended). I hunt in the fall to put meat in the freezer. I'm not a trophy hunter so no Bambies hanging in my house. I teach the Concealed Carry course for N.C. and enjoy doing that. I build and repair PC's for friends and family. I used to fly RC planes when I was much younger and recently purchased a 450 class RC helicopter with full collective controls. Assembled it from a kit and and ground tested it but, have never flown it. Decided it was to "intense" for me and am selling it to buy a 2-meter RC powered glider that I can mount a small video camera on. I get enough thrills riding and just wanted something I can fly and relax and enjoy the flight with. My wife, Deb, and I enjoy trips on the bike or her car. She really wants a Subaru WRX STI but, it's a bit above our budget. Like me, she doesn't like automatic transmissions. Her car is a 2013 Honda Civic Si Sedan. It's Honda's race/tuner car that's set up with 2.4l IVTEC 201hp, stiffer suspension, larger wheels, 6-speed, limited to 143mph, 30+mpg, yadda, yadda, yadda... It's a ball to drive. So, she has her car and I have my bike. Sometimes she lets me drive it. Says she will never drive a bike. I can't even get her to take the MSC on a little 250cc bike. NOPE! She won't do it. Maybe it I get a Spyder.

Ham Radio. Enjoy going to the swap meets and seeing all the "old gear".....stuff that was popular when I first got into radio in the late 1950's. Stuff they got now is just so advanced, I can hardly believe it! But, I still love that 600 watt tube rig I have.....

I've gotta ask what your favored brand of tractor is. Still using a 350 Farmall and 630 JD here for snow and whatever else comes along. Old Abe will always be my favorite emblem though.
