Voyager XII Radio is now Bluetooth, flash and SD card capable
Well after several attempts mounting and drilling can carving out holes in the radio front panel, I finally managed to secure the new module in place of the cassette deck..
Inside with cassette deck removed. New relays and you can just make out the bluetooth antenna.
Built in FM radio , so you can have more presets
Bluetooth mode
USB flash drive with MP3 mode
Radio Mounted into the bike,
Bit more information.. The relays are part of ... wait for it.. Handlebar up/down track or channel select on the module.
There is also an infra red remote control but Im doubting the use of that in bright sunlight and while riding..
If USB flash or SD card is in place, it will start up reading that and playing..
Caveats..
The Tape circuit which this needs to use is inherently "noisy" and hisses but this is only noticeable with the headsets.. Those of you who have the jack input, its no worse than that.
The output of this module is pretty high.. Its adjustable and It tends to start up at max volume which is pretty loud but it seems to have a little "memory" for the presets on the radio etc so it may store the new volume setting .
Line input.. It will allow an input the same as the MP3 socket/GPS/Phone input like I did before.. I can re-use existing sockets on those radios I have already modded..
Radio may not be as sensitive as the stock radio.. Still playing with that.
Once this module is installed, there is no going back to a cassette deck without a new front panel.
MP3 thumb drives. These will need to be the micro sized ones in order for the flap to close and also keep stress on the USB socket to a minimum. I can supply 8gb micros that work fine.
Ok..
I hope this has whetted your appetites... This mod will only be done at my house and not at the rally as its so time consuming.. I have to cut aluminium to make stand off washers to mount this.... Unless someone knows of a good source of rectangular, 7/8"(h) x 1/4"(w) 1/8"(Thick) washers drilled or undrilled.. :-)
I rode to work this morning (International Ride to work day).. Tested all modes except line. Everything seems fine.. No ignition interference or alterternator whine.. :-)

Re: Voyager XII Radio is now Bluetooth, flash and SD card cap
Ok.. got chance to "play" with the module a little more this morning on the way to work..
Yes, it seems to remember the last mp3 track played, the last radio station selected and the last output setting (volume wise).
With the handlebar control channel/track select, I can also hold down the up or down (scan/prog) on the handlebar while playing radio or MP3 and adjust the module's volume output there too.
Built in Radio:
Has a Auto-scan and program feature that stores 20 presets! One issue, its not that sensitive so for me in Radford listening to , say 92.3 FM From Roanoke some 45 miles away, it got a little scratchy on the way in to work till i climbed the hills and it became more solid. more local radios lock and stay clean. the stock radio on the same 92.3 was a little more sensitive and although it became "fluttery" it wasnt as fluttery as the module's radio.. But considering its size, Im impressed.. The presets are once again, selected with the handlebar scan up/down and again, holding the scan up or down , down adjusts the module's output power.
Auto volume adjust with speed is unaffected of course.. That works as normal through the loudspeakers..
Thinking about options here now..
Option 1: Replace stock cassette deck as per pictures above. (Tape door closes over the module and micro USB flash drive)
Option 2: Build an add on box which will require a cable to the aux in socket on the front or the back of the radio and an additional 12V supply for those of you who have had the MP3 socket installed by me. This probably will NOT have handlebar controls and will NOT be water resistant. It will have 2 sockets (Power in and audio out) for quick detach depending on how/where you mount it. Module's Radio will NOT function well at all.
Option 3: it MAY be possible to use this option 2 with a cassette adapter BUT as with currently used cassette adapters, its dependent on the age/quality of the tape belts as the heads in the desk have to be driven forwards by the belts so they can contact the pickup in the adapter.Upshot is, if your belts fail or are failing, Adapter will fail to send audio into the system.
Options 2 and 3 are possible maybe's and certainly more of an option for overseas owners where mailing the radio is fraught with costs or damage issues..
Anyone got any other thoughts?
Pete

You have to be an AVA member to post, view, and download attachments.
Pete, you should probably post the photos as images rather than attachments unless your intent was to make them available only for AVA members.

What would the cost of this be for option 1?

Agreed. Option 1 sounds like thebest option. How much are you going to charge? I would love to have this.
