Loud clanking from rear of motor/drive shaft

Loud clanking from rear of motor/drive shaft
I have an 86 1300. When I get over 20MPH and let off the throttle an extremely loud noise come from the back of the motor or front of drive shaft. It also happens when I pull the clutch in. (Noise from same area with clutch) as long as I don't let off the throttle or pull the clutch it runs like a champ. Anyone have any idea what this might be? Whatever it is it occurs when pressure is relived from the rear wheel. Pretty sure it's coming from the drive shaft but want to know forsure before I tear it apart.
