Water and Radios dont mix!

Post by suzib6sw »

Received this radio a few weeks ago. The owner of the '86 it came from said he had just bought the bike as a fixer upper as it has stood for a number of years outside.. The vinyl cover on top of the radio was in tact but the rubber seal around the front of the radio had succumbed to the elements and perished.
You can see the degree of damage in the pictures.
I did spend a hour or so, cleaning as much of it up as I could and I did power it up just to see what has worth salvaging if anything..
Amazingly, it tried, really tried to work. The amp worked, the am and FM tried to scan but couldnt lock onto anything. The processor display driver was shot so only a few segments lit..
In all honesty, this is a tribute to just how well built these Clarions were.. Judge for yourself but I am more and more impressed with this design, the more I see of these..

If you re-solder the connection (Picture #3 from right to left) row 20 pin 18 and row 19 pin 18 the whole radio would be good as new.

Oh, I don't think that is necessary, Pete. Been meaning to join, downloaded application and will probably mail it. From description I suppose to repair will require salvage parts from another donor Clarion.

Just my observations it is a top notch radio, considering it is mid 1980's technology, probably the best at the time. I downloaded a schematic somewhere pointed through either this forum or another that has info on interfacing a standard CB radio to the Clarion; purchased harness, headset and PPT switch recommended (surprised still available) and a Midland CB-1 radio. Also found sources on the net to purchase the various DIN connectors required. Antenna mount is rare, have a 1/2" square steel pipe, will use that to make a mount for the 3' trucker mirror antenna I bought. Will be a Fall project.

Went on a ride with the local VFW riders two months ago, several had CB's. If I had one, would have been able to communicate with them on the ride; ditto for others.
