New Voyager prices

Post by Steve do »

I was riding this morning and was wondering if any one remembered what they paid for their Voyager 12s when they bought them new? I got my first 12, a 88 model, if I remember correct I drove it out for $8400. Been 26 years ago, brain could be a little rusty. I have a 03 now.
There was a post a little while back about the colors, I found it interesting, the different prices through the years would be interesting to know also.

I don't know about new prices as I bought my 2001 last year.

http://www.billydump.com/cav/articles/r ... r_1987.pdf

has an article comparing all the luxury tourers and shows retail list for the 1987 XII as $8,099 US. It is a good article for comparing the various 1987 tourers, seems the XII did well.

http://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/ ... er_xii.htm

has a reprint of an article from 1986, price given was $8,700, but given the site is based in South Africa, I don't know what country's prices were being quoted.

Personally I am curious as to what my 2001 listed for, what most people after dickering paid for. A search on the 'net brought up nothing.

Found a site that stated a 92-93 voyager was listed at $8700
I also saw another add from Cycle world for a 99 for $11,999 MSRP but that sure seems high.

I believe I have most, if not all the Cycle World Buyer's Guides from about '88 through 04'ish. I'm pretty sure I recall the '03 MSRP was $12,300.00. I'll have to see about digging out the guides and checking them out.

It would be good if someone could provide at least the suggest retail list for all years of the Voyager. Then we would have an idea of each person's bike relative worth new. I know that now it doesn't really matter, as the XII is over 10 years old, and that now cosmetic and mechanical condition play heavily into final selling price.

One thing I am impressed with is that even with the so-called warts with the bike, the Kawasaki engineers did something worth marveling about. Compared with the other bikes, the XII is nimbler with better acceleration, cornering performance and greater storage capacity, and was undercutting the other bikes in cost.

Yes, I've heard it argued about the other bike's comfort, etc. Overall I think that Kawasaki came up with a winner. Perhaps it is a Buick versus a Cadillac, but I've received a lot of compliments from other people about my bike. Some have even asked me if it was new.

I'm not complaining. I am very happy with my Voyager, and the more I learn about it the more I like it. To me it is truly the poor man's Goldwing. :devl

Thanks ghostler, I enjoyed reading the articles. I agree with the other post, if Kawasaki would punch it out to say 1600 or more and update the electronics, they would have a line out the door of people wanting them. It is clear that the owners love them and take care of them. I was glad to see so many at the rally. Kawasaki could have something here if they handled it right.
Thanks for all the post and info!!!

I picked my 2000 up in 2010 with about 21000 miles on it. At the time, I had a 99 Polaris Sportsman 500 ATV that had only 800 miles on it. I really had no real use for the 4 wheeler, so I thought I would advertise on Craigslist for anyone wanting to trade for a touring style bike. Surprisingly, I had a guy within 10 miles of me who would do the trade even up! He even felt bad because the bike had some light scratches on it! I told him I didn't mind a bit. Oh....I only paid $1000 for the 4 wheeler!

You're welcome, Steven. I think that Kawasaki has decided to bank on the combination of their full dressed Vulcan Voyager and Concours 1400 to replace the XII. I don't like the ergonomics of the Concours, accessory trunk seems to be a bit small. I don't think a pillion passenger would be comfortable on a Concours without a seat change. The Vulcan Voyager seems nice, but I like the spirited performance of the XII.

In the spring of 2004 the local dealer had the last NEW Voyager XII he would get on his sale floor for $9899. At the time I had just bought my slightly used ZRX1100 and wished for all the world I had the money to buy it. Comparable Gold Wings at the time were going for around $17000. starting price. And seriously, I had never given a full blown touring bike a second look at that time. I just liked the idea of having a radio and saddlebags!

In January 2009 I purchased my 2001 XII for $5750. with just under 20,000 miles on it. And yes, it was more pristine than I could have imagined. Kudos to the previous owner.

I had a friend call the trunk on my XII as the "Mary Poppins box" because of its generous size. It seemed I'd never run out of stuff I could pull from that box. :gig:

I got my 2000 xii for $4,000 back in 2005 with 20,000 miles on it. The owner needed quick cash for a down payment on a Tundra. I just turned over 85,000 miles. Love it. :woohoo:
