Confirming carb hoses and plugs

Post by chicagorandy »

My previous bikes had twin carbs, so this is my first outing with a 4 cylinder. Someone please verify that what I am seeing on my bike is the way it is 'supposed' to be on an '86. I ask because there is not a clear picture in the service manual and the line drawings of hose routings leave some rooom for doubt. Also since I am now the 4th owner of this machine, only the gods know what previous owners and mechanics may have done so I am better off making sure with you good folks than blindly accepting what I see as being correct.....

Left to right (as seated on the bike) I will call them carbs 1 thru 4, with 1 being on my far left, 4 being on my far right and 2&3 in the middle.

Carbs 1 & 4 have a connecting hose from their respective vacuum nipples meeting at a "T" which proceeds toward the front of the engine. Carbs 2&3 have rubber plugs capping them off, no hoses. Is this correct?

Once my balancer gauge set arrives and after I have each gauge calibrated to my satisfaction, I will be attaching to those four vacuum nipples and proceeding with any necessary adjustments - 1st the left two carbs, then the right two and finally the left bank of two vs the right bank of two. Am I also correct in this process?

Apologies for so many 'rookie' postings but I'd rather ask BEFORE proceeding than be counseled afterwards that I should have asked first - lol - I really DO want to spend more time ridin' than wrenchin'.

The Voyager is now my 4th cycle ( I didn't start riding until my 50's) and I have logged about 75,000 miles on two and three wheels. The Voyager is also the largest, most powerful and heaviest bike I have owned and I have dreams of it being my freedom machine to tour far and wide, something that was not the best goal for my other rigs. Frankly I was shopping 30yr old Goldwings when this popped up on Craigslist. It looks to be exactly what I've wanted.

I haven't done this in years, so watch for a guru to correct me but You sound about right. Three screws do the adjusting. One screw between carb 1 & 2 and another between carb 3 & 4. Balance them first and then adjust the balance between the now paired carbs by adjusting the screw between carb 2 & 3.
