Started my annual trip to a week of meetings in Colorado (now in Woodland Park, previously in Colorado Springs) on Saturday the 27th (2014). Left at 8am and was home again a little after noon.
Leaving Phoenix, I had decided to take an extra day and a camera to see eastern utah and travel through western Colorado, staying the night in Montrose, CO.
Let's just say it didn't go as planned.
I stopped approximately an hour up I-17 (Prescott, AZ exit) at a Mcdonalds to make room for and buy a cup of coffee. 10 minutes later (quite a line of people that morning) I came out to get back on the bike and there was an over a foot wide oil slick under the bike (2003) and it was growing.
Thank you ROK insurance as I was home again after no cost for the Tow truck.
Anyway, my wife let me use her 97 V800a to make the trip (but with a lot less stuff). I left the next morning and went via Albuquerque instead (spent the night with my Grandsons). There, because of weather and the more exposed riding on the Vulcan, my daughter-in-law talked me into borrowing my son's 2014 F150 (with the Eco engine). Cost more, but because I was going to have a 60 mile a day commute from the free accommodations to the meeting locations, I gave in (actually was a sloppy week whereas previous years it had been beautiful).
So now I am finally able to deal with the 2003 XII and have to pull the oil pan. Near as I can tell, something hit it at the curve and put a 1/8" long crack in it.
So, I thought I could pull it without major, but yesterday I see that it requires the exhaust be pulled (two bolts under the right side). Any advice would be welcome before I start again tomorrow.
I just have it on the center stand do to lack of a way to jack it up and access the pan (Ideas?). Picks and updates to follow.

I bottomed out on a steel motorized gate rail and it tore the oil drain bolt right out of the oil pan. Carl sent me a nice oil pan, gasket, and exhaust gaskets.
The exhaust does have to come off. If I remember right, I got the exhaust headers off with only swinging the bottom of the radiator away from the bottom hose, and I could get the headers out.
Then remove the oil pan and remove the "few" components of the oil pan that have to be relocated to the new pan and reinstall. That was pretty much it. If I can get through it, anyone can.
Now, you mentioned it was a crack in the pan. Are you considering repairing the pan? I've heard that if you drill a small hole at the ends of the crack then use a strong repair material such as JB Weld to fill the crack, it is possible. However, saying that, I would go with the replacement, then try the repair and put it on the shelf for the next guy. Just a thought.
Here's hoping for a speedy repair.

Re: Hole in Oil Pan (OUCH)
Thanks Bill.
On the day this happened, Carl says he has a pan for me, but wanted to wait to see if i will need anything else. I will be working on it again today, so will post later.
Enjoy,
Ken

Re: Hole in Oil Pan (OUCH)
I looked in Dollar for Dollar and Tech notes and couldn't see if there is a cross listing for the Radiator Cap from an auto Parts store (NAPA, etc..)
Gas Cap (mine has a melt or gash in it) would be another item. I am looking at one on ebay from a 2002 ($12 ish). *OOPS - too late, someone beat me too it (you know who you are... )
I might take the old caps to Napa if no one knows. Thanks again to all.
*Found a listing (Radiator caps) online: #NAPA 703-1695 Stant 10227
Also, MUCHO"S GRACIAS TO Sir Carl Leo (we should elevate him to Knighthood) for his help again (he is sending an Oil Pan and related parts).
Miss my Ride!!!!
Blessings,
Ken
* Edited later same morning!

Ken, if you get that NAPA radiator cap and it works, let me know and I will put it on the Dollar4dollar page. Also a gas cap if you find one.

The NAPA Radiator Cap (NAPA 703-1695) works just fine. Also the #9803 Hose from NAPA replaces the Bypass radiator hose (small diameter/long hose that connects at bottom of radiator).debron wrote:Ken, if you get that NAPA radiator cap and it works, let me know and I will put it on the Dollar4dollar page.
