Another distracted driver story

Post by Tonyvdb »

This is a news story of a local guy here >> http://edmonton.ctvnews.ca/video?clipId ... tPageNum=1 that really upset me and really shows what can happen if you dont pay attention.
What really bugs me is the driver who was in the truck only got a $170 fine. If the driver of the bike had died he would have been charged with manslaughter. and the bike owners life is changed forever and now has to drive a trike mod because he cant drive a normal bike Thats crazy!

John I agree with your post. some jail time needed :tho: cell phones are the most annoying of all devices drivers use. Not a day goes by that I don't see cagers drifting out of lane or slamming the brakes on to avoid stopped traffic. Lawmakers think they can just make law's to solve the problem. That's not going to stop it.... and a mere fine for being caught using a cell in a car is not the cure either. Its like red light camera's here in NJ. The dangerous intersections all have them now, but instead of just changing the timing of the signal's to help with the problem, they time the yellow down to the lowest limit allowed by LAW just to drive up fines. A mere two second delay for the opposing traffic green signal would make things better and cost us ( the taxpayers ) far less money. The accidents at these intersections still occur but the towns get more MONEY. Driving habits have changed for the worse and people are in just too much of a rush to get somewhere. How you fix that is anyone's guess. That poor guy in the news was very lucky to be alive, let alone walk again. Perhaps doing away with NO-Fault insurance would help by showing people they are responsible for their actions. Just my 2cents... I needed to vent some anger after this weeks close call with a distracted driver. Gene

I had a guy about a month ago try to change lanes while I was beside him and then when I turned around at the next stop light to give him "the look" he acted as if it was no big deal.
Ugh, some days I want to kick the side of the peoples cars.

The technology must be available to prevent a cell phone from operating while a vehicle is moving. Wonder why that technology is not being used?

there is however there are two issues with that:
One, how does it know if its the driver or a passenger who is using the phone
Two, someone would just figure out an app that would bypass it Im sure.

Saw this one on another forum.....85 years old and loses his life over a CD. I wondered if he was a member of the AVA but the OP of the article didn't think so. I try to pay attention to what's going on behind me at stop lights but it's easy to forget at times. Pictures like this help you remember to plan an escape route....

The tech is available. Common sense & a off button.
Everyone has common sense, very few use it when it comes to phones

A number of years ago a friend of mine was driving a farm tractor towing a large baler[total weight about 28000 lbs]and got rear ended by an 18 wheeler whose driver was reading a book. The trucking company got to spend about $120,000 to replace his equipment plus his hospital bill. :thk:
