Falling in between gears
It has happened very rarely, but I have tried to do a 3-4 or 4-3 shift and have it gone terribly wrong and I fall out of gear. I can't recall any other gears involved and was just wondering if anyone else has had this happen. Hasn't happened to me even a handful of times, but it can be quite disconcerting.

Re: Falling in between gears
This may or may not be your issue but occasionally what happens to me is I just miss the shift, i.e. don't step down hard enough on the shifter (or kick up hard enough) and the tranny ends up not completely in the right gear, makes a shout of complaint, the falls out of gear. Hoping no one else noticed, I quickly stomp it back into gear!
Fortunately not very often!

Re: Falling in between gears
Mine does it if not assertively shifted when going to 2nd gear (pops back into neutral). Did it once during a corner at an intersection (not enjoyable at all). I just am more assertive (i think that is the word) when shifting to 2nd (got to show her who's boss).joemaniaci wrote:It has happened very rarely, but I have tried to do a 3-4 or 4-3 shift and have it gone terribly wrong and I fall out of gear. I guess there could be other issues besides the original design, but i hope not for your sake. Carl could probably enlighten us all if he chooses to.
Thanks for noticing,
Ken
PS. Oh and thanks Carl for the quick ship of those O'Rings. Got them in last night and rode in to work this morning (a chilly 60f here in Phoenix). I will check for leaks at my next break.

Re: Falling in between gears
Odd, my 2003 ready to explode, voyager never has had a shifting problem.

Re: Falling in between gears
Hi Everyone,
The only time my '95 Voyager falls between gears is when I mess up and put it between gears. Another words when I (not Bike) miss a shift. Doesn't happen often, Makes me feel like a newbe rider when it happens! A few times when it was cold out and I did not let the bike warm up enough before taking off I went to shift from first to second and it would not go into second the first time, I just let it stay in first a little longer then when I tried second again it
shifted fine.

Re: Falling in between gears
Sometimes you just get so comfortable on the bike that you get a lazy shift.Just slip your toe under/above the shifter and tap it.Oops, not hard enough, hope nobody saw that.
We have all probably done it at one time or another, even those who wont admit it .
The more you do it the less your likely to do it again.

Re: Falling in between gears
Driving or riding anything with a clutch, I always put pressure on the shift lever, or stick {known as preloading} prior to shifting. Just taking up on the slack in the lever. I still miss a shift occasionally when I fail to, as it states in the manual, shift smartly.

Re: Falling in between gears
My wife and I get this occasionally on our '93. It happens to her more often than me, but I get it occasionally, as well. I usually chalk it up to my being absent-mindedly lazy when shifting. It occurs between 2-3, and 3-4, usually, but occasionally 1-2, as well. It is not common, but my wife agrees, it is operator error, when she does it too. It is a reminder to shift properly, and decisively, not half-arsed, in la-la land... YMMV. Cheers!

Re: Falling in between gears
Missing a gear happens to me occasionally also,if I am not thinking about what I am doing, and don't follow through to complete the shift. As long as nobody notices,I am doing OK ,right?
