dunlop elite 3's

Post by ScottLee »

I just purchased a pair of new Dunlop E3's last week to replace a set of tired Metzler marathons (which worked great while they were in good shape) and wanted to pass along some new part numbers that have changed from the originals. Dunlop originally spec'd a front MT90B16 72h dunlop part # 4079-90 on their tire selector but it has been discontinued as of late 2014. The shops and parts distributers i spoke with would only tell me its been discontinued with no replacment. According to dunlop consumer affairs, it was replaced with a 130/90B16 dunlop part # 4079-42. The rear MV85B15 77h dunlop part # 4079-45 is the same and unchanged. I'm sure you can still find a front 4079-90 around somewhere but its getting old sitting on the shelf so heads up. Hopefully this helps anyone looking for new e3's. I've been rolling on the new tires for about two weeks now and love them so far.

Yep. I got the same info back when I emailed Dunlop back in March. Never did get a response from Dennis Kirk. Dunlop said they were working on getting their website updated to reflect the change to a more standard automotive type sizing instead of the old motorcycle tire markings.

Shopping for tires can be confusing. I asked Pirelli if they made tires for our bike. They said sure as per our fitment guide. Every bike but the Voyager is listed on their fitment guide lol.

There are a lot of bikes out there, current models and bikes from the past 4+ decades, and for a company to list all of them... Well, that is asking for the Moon. :rolling:

I go by size, not fitment charts, or tables. It does require knowing more than just the size, though. Other things, like weight and speed ratings, come into play also. This is where the owner's manual comes in handy. Cheers!

I suggested to Pirelli to add the Voyager 1200 to their Kawasaki bike list. It's very long list,
Obviously they didn't care to

Every maker has a bad tire come off the line sometimes. Having said that, I've been riding on multiple sets of Pirelli MT66 Route tires, on three different bikes, since around 2007, including my V-XII. I've never had an issue with them yet, but I could get one of the Monday Morning Special's at any time...

For front end shakes, check the torque on the triple-tree assembly, the front wheel, etc. Check the wheel bearings, as well. Have you changed the fork oil? Is the tire properly balanced? Is the rear tire balanced, and aligned properly (rear tires can affect the front's handling)? Are the tires in good condition: cupped, dry rot, low tread? Are you using a right-angle stem on the tire? These need to be turned inline with the tire, or they could unbalance the tire side-to-side.

After all of that, it is time to replace the tire, and see if that eliminates the problem. Sometimes the defect is buried within the rubber such that you would need an X-ray to determine where the problem is -- if it will show up at all. Good luck, and let us know what solves the issue, as we may need that fix for ourselves at some future time. Cheers!

I am sure it's the tire, the owner played with pressure and that affected the shake.
everything else was checked including the fender bushings.
