OIL PRESSURE

Post by baddaddy54 »

Thinking of buying a 1986 1300 owner said it has low oil pressure and he said new oil pump did not fix the problem any ideas?

The "oill" warning light is not a pressure light but a oil level light .Most of the time when it comes on there is a dirty sensor in the oil pan .usually an oil change with a good detergent additive can stop it from coming on ,otherwise just check the sight glass periodically and it will be fine .Maybe put a piece of tape over the light so it's not so annoying .
Another thing to keep in mind is that the "cruise " button is not a cruise control but rather a cruise mode ,changes air/fuel mix for better gas mileage .Only 87/88 had a cruise control .
I love the Burgundy color of the 86.

I doubt it has low oil pressure ,but the sensor is a pain to get at.
If he will let you take it for a half hour or more test ride you should be able to make an informed decision.
These things take 6 qts of oil .check the site glass and make sure you can see oil ,if all you can see is black then it probably is so grungy that a couple oil changes and additives may need to be done to clean the sensor.
If his reason for thinking low pressure is based on the idiot lights then your probably good to go.

Thanks for the reply i bought the bike because your info on the oil level sensor instead of oil pressure was the reason i road it about 40 miles getting it back home and the oil light kept flashing but did not worry about it havent had time to ck the sight glass but noticed the clutch was slipping i think the guy that worked on the bike put syn oil back in it.

Resetting the clutch is not very hard.
You can find the manuals here
http://www.kz1300.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Two manuals - kz1300 base manual and ZN1300 supplement .
A lot of people are switching to Rotella T oil.It's classified diesel but it doesn't have all the friction modifiers in it that car oils do so it's a lot easier on the clutch plus it has more detergents to help keep the engine clean.
Enjoy your new ride
