In a rather spirited string on the forum a few months ago the topic was Metzler tire chuncking (including some really interesting pictures from Chris of KC). Has there been any more problems recently?

It was also interesting how Metzler passed the blame off as under-inflation, even though hunderds of people had the same problem.

We are happy with our Metzlers but make certain we are 38 psi front 46 rear (cold prior to a ride). Regarless they square off around here (due to our straight roads) at around 10,000 and don't corner well after that. We may consider going past the recommended maximum psi recomendation.

After Chris posted about his tire chunking, I went out and inspected mine with a magnifying glass. I found some splitting in the rain grooves. The tire had 10,000 miles on it. I got it replaced at 50% off. I had to call the Tucker Rocky rep myself to get some action.

David, what is the manufacture date on the tire? There are so many things that can cause a tire to go bad. Weather (heat/cold), stale moist air in the tire, low air/too much air, tire treatments, even salts on the roads. Not to say there isn't anything wrong with the tire such as a defect but I've seen cracking and separation in all brands of tires at one time or another. I just hate to see 'any' brand tire get a bad rapp because of a few problems. I would think that if a problem arises with any brand tire, maybe there could be a place on the tips section where you could post 'not only' the brand tire, but the 'year' and application for the tire. That way we can better track a bad run of tire rather than condemn a 'brand'. There is one thing sometimes we don't take into consideration. The fact that only one weeks bad run in a tire can spreed to many countries. They make thousands of tires in one week and ship them out all over the world. Thus the importance of checking manufactures dates. Not to mention the fact that tires can sit on dealers and warehouse shelves for months. IF, we can narrow it down to the 'date' on a bad run, we can stay away from it or even notify the company in question. Which would be the right thing to do IMO.
Just a thought.

I did go with another ME880. I did not look at the manufacturer's date, but the tire had been on the bike around one year. The dealer and the Tucker Rocky rep acted surprised that I still had a lot of tire left with 10,000 miles on it. I told them it is because I am diligent about checking air pressure, and make sure and use all of the tire, not just the center tread.

The bike is garage kept and under a cover when at work so the only sun exposure is when I am riding. I'm not near the ocean and they don't salt the roads around here except a couple of overpasses if ice is expected. I don't ride two up, don't tow a trailer, the bike handled fine and I needed a magnifying glass to find the problem.
