Short-Sheath on Speedo Cable - takes in water

Post by Grumpy »

This can be filed under 'idot syncracies' - passed along to me by a more experienced Voyager owner, I was skeptical at first but sure enough, he was right. the outer plastic sheath covering the speedo cable will catch water at the top, just as it enters the headlight housing, and allow the water to siphon down into the speedo gear housing on the front wheel.
.
To check for this & clear the water: disconnect the speedo cable at the wheel, and blow the accumulated water out w/some compressed air from the top of the sheath. Then silicone & tape the top end to prevent further problems. Clean the water out of the gear assy at the wheel, re-grease & assemble. Bingo bango bongo, a job well done. :-)
.
The 'back story'' I was given about this was that this is only a problem on newer bikes - after 1995 or so, alledgedly MaKaw was starting to trim nickles and dimes from the assembly process, and shortening wires, cables, and in this case, the sheath saved some money. :-|

Hmmm, I have an '88 Voyager and it never had the sheath since I owned it, and it was bought in the early 90's (used, and I would be surprised if it had the cable replaced by previous owner with the few miles that were on it. :hmm:
