CB Radios

Post by davidl »

Has anyone heard of Kennedy Technologies in Kansas? I am trying to connect a Cobra 19 Ultra III to my '00 XII & I ran across this company. They make interconnects for cbs, cellphones, ipods, mp3s & other things. I have talked to them & they seem like they know what they are talking about. I was just looking for some feedback from AVAers. Any info or experiences would help. thanks http://www.cellset.com

FYI for anyone interested. I contacted Kennedy Tech they were vey helpful. I am mounting a Cobra 19 Ultra III to the Clarion system. They did not have this cb listed but after they researched it, was able to recommend the connections for me. Their system connects between the y-cord & the Clarion cable. System kills the radio if you get traffic over the cb. Has a "tranmit button" you connect above the radio controls for easy use. A little pricey but all total less than $250 cb included. Less than a OEM system & works, hopefully, better than one just mounted on the bike. They also have connects for GPS, cellphones & iphones. http://www.cellset.com

The Cobra 19 is a great little radio. Bought one. I took it back to Wally world because it would not work with the Kennedy system. Ended up buying a Midland that plugged into their system. Haven't installed it but doesn't look difficult. Great thing is that you can use the intercom system on the XII.

Where are you going to mount the Cobra CB? Will it fit in the left dash pocket so it will be out of the way? I am also assuming that Ken Tech will supply all the wiring so you will not need to use the hand held. Will it operate through a push to talk that can be mounted near the left grip? Seeing that Walmart sells the Cobra for around $40, can I assume that Ken Tech takes up the rest of that $250? If so, what are the parts #s on 'everything' that will be needed. It would be nice for those that need a CB, to know all the part #s. Maybe Ken tech could put together a package. ???

Didn't someone make a CB that fits into the left fairing pocket and supplied all the connections for the Voyager? What happened to that unit.

Fritz, AirRider or Sierra had it, and they wanted $600 for what was basically, a car CB unit turned sideways. I'm guessing it didn't sell very well, so they discontinued it. At the time it came out, it was cheaper than what the OEM units were bringing, but still a lot of coin for what it was. Then J&M came out with their handlebar mounted unit (complete with MP3 connectivity) for the same price and well, the writing was on the wall.

Ken Tech has a list of radios that are compatable w/their wiring. They also research which harness fits a radio that is not on their list. Sometimes they are right, sometimes not. Biggest thing is that the radio needs to have ports/connects for external mic & speaker. If your radio has that, they should be able to connect. They have a PTT that mounts either on the handlebars or below directly in front of the left handgrip. Also the main connection from Kennedy connects power, PTT, spkr/mic & the intercom system on the XII together. Press the PTT & it kills what ever is on FM/AM/intercom. It does use the intercom for the mic & speakers. Just have to find a place to mount the radio probably on the right side storage door. Radio is "waterproof" so it should work. Also if needed you can chg channels/volume, etc.

I have mounted the Kennedy system to my '00. I thought it was going to be difficult but they make it so even for electronically challenged people like me, it can be done. Mounted the "black box" in the casette box, drilled holes thru the side to accomodate the wiring harnesses. The hardest part was how to mount the cb. Decided to mount it on the right side storage box on the fairing so I could see what channel I was on, change the volume or channel if necessary. Works like a charm. Now I need to see if I can use the standard cb antennae I have on the bike.

I was reading my Voyager booklet last night & there is a section on Kennedy cb connection in it. Should have read that first. lol

Sorry this took so long to post. I finally sat down last Sat, read the instructions on connecting the Kennedy equipment to my Voyager and did it. I have a hard time starting things.. Anyway, it wasn't that hard, just had to decide where to put the "black box". Took the plastic off the left side. Mounted the box in the bottom for the "cassette" box. I had to drill 4 holes for the connectors. Mounted the fused power cord, the interconnect for the intercom and the PTT underneath the casette box w/zipties. Ran the wiring harness for the cb around the inside of the fairing & out on the right side. I mounted the PTT w/some super sticky tape where it would be if you were using the OEM CB. I mounted the handheld cb on the rightside fairing box w/velcro & a pouch the wife made to hold the radio. I put it there so I could see the channel as we were going down the rode. Followed the instructions provided on which switches to code up or down in the black box & it works like a charm. This is the address to the pics. http://tinypic.com/3ia1xvk3
