Clutch Lockout Switch - Which Way Is Right ?

Just bought a really clean 01 with custom (i.e., not factory colors) paint job and lotsa shiney chrome. It has a couple functional issues though and one of them is the lockout switch on the clutch. On my 99, I can pull in the clutch and start the bike in any gear. On the 01, I pull in the clutch, even in neutral I think, and the bike will not start. Which way is right? I sure don't like the way the 01 is set up - seems like a good way to get killed, especially since I managed to stall it a couple times.

In neutral, the bike should start without the clutch pulled in. In any gear, the bike should start with the clucth pulled in.

That is the way my 99 acts and certainly the way I prefer it. Guess that makes one more thing to troubleshoot.

Will post a couple pix of the new ride if the sunshine ever returns to Ohio long enough for some photos.

Well Chris, you've lost me talking about two different things at the same time. I know what a clutch is, it's that thingy where springs jump out and bite me when I take the last bolt out (I'm thinking of tractors, not necessarily a m/c). For the life of me I can't figure out what a clucth is. Is that just before or after a clutch? Or is that the sound one makes? Of course any and all assistance will be appreciated as I keep notes in my manual for future reference.

I think what he is referring to is the cluch....I noticed that there are about 50 or more on ebay for sale. Maybe this would help.

Mine acted like this since I bought the bike this spring.Just assumed that it was broke.
After reading your post ,I decided to give it a shot of penetrating oil .Couple days later and it's working just fine.Go figure.
