Taillight conversion kits. To convert or not to convert!

Post by n0nab »

Has anyone had any experiences with these turn signal conversion kits? It looks interesting, but I really wonder how they do this....especially thru an amber lense. Any thoughts?

I've been looking at those conversion kits for a while but just don't wanna spend the money, as far as 'how they do that' the LED is a very bright point of light and will overpower the lens its shining through, if you want to replace your standard brake light bulb with an LED you need to get a red LED because a standard white LED will just show through the red lens as a white hot spot; if you want to replace your standard turn signal bulb with an LED, you have to get an amber LED. In the case of the conversion kit, the red LED will show 'through' the amber lens as a red light, and then when you put on your turn sig it will overpower the red LED and light the lens up amber.

n0nab,
I have converted two Voyagers with the p/n 01312 ($14.--) conversion kit. At night, you will have nice red running lights across your back side. When you turn on the turn signals the amber and red will alternate. Very nice effect.

Thanks for the input. I think I'll try the conversion kit. I'll let you all know how it turns out.

I used one of their kits on my BMW K1200LT some years back and really liked the result. Easy install.

I have the kit installed on my XII and it works very well. I was hesitant at first like all of you but they show red when lit and amber when the turn signals are on just as they should. I have even installed red LED's in place of the standard 194 red bulbs with the same results. Go for it.....You will love them.....

Yes, install the red LEDs because the standard red bulb will lose its red intensity after a while and you won't have that deep red glow.

Ok. Installed the kit, it's very easy and straight forward. The LED's aren't as bright as the incandescent bulbs, but are bright enough and do make a difference. I would call it a subtle brightness, if there is such a thing. Thanks to everyone for the input and suggestions.

Hi all, this is my first post  I bought an 01 Xll one year ago . I am doing a fender / tail light conversion . Stripped the paint from the lens Where do you find the sockets for the 2 1157 bulbs . I did not like the sockets I saw on the rack at the local Auto Zone . They did not have a ground wire just cheap stamped tin.

I went to my local NAPA store and bought the sockets there, then installed and wired them up. Not a difficult job.
