Garmin 2610 mounting
Has anyone mounted a Garmin 2610 on the dash? I know I could use a RAM mount and put it on the bars but I would rather have it centrally located.

Bisker,
Not sure where to mount as I mounted mine low on the handle bars, but check this company for different types of mounts. Wendy in Savanah GA. is Great to work with.

Re: Garmin 2610 mounting
I have mine mounted on the cruise control hump. Can post pix when I get home if you are interested. Took the mounting base apart and bolted it to the hump.

Re: Garmin 2610 mounting
Bill,
Thought I already had a picture but guess not. Will get one tomorrow after work.
Did not actually 'bolt' things together but it is pretty close and has held up for the Rapid City, Bowling Green, and Santa Fe Rallies plus all the weekenders and Poker Runs in between.
I took the screws out of the bottom of the mount, marked thru the holes in the bottom of the mount onto the cruise control hump. Then took the hump off the tank and removed the display as the screws come pretty close to the display and a drill bit would definitely hit the display. Got some slightly longer screws to replace the originals and bolted everything back together. Have not had any trouble with things loosening up in all those miles.
I think the hump mounting spot is probably the best available as far as not having any issues with glare or sunlight washout. About the only time the sun can really get to the display is when it is just a little beyond overhead because if it is even a little to your back the GPS is shielded by your body. So far a little change in the angle of the unit brings it back into full visibility.
My 2610 got flakey after BG so I found a refurb 2730 that has XM and MP3 capabilities but have not tried that part of it yet. Bought the cassette adapter and hope to score one of those $20 for 5 months subscriptions to XM this summer so we will see how that turns out.
Pictures tomorrow afternoon for sure !!!!

Re: Garmin 2610 mounting
Thanks Mike,
I may not drll the mount, I have a couple of the super sticking mounting pads I'll probably try that first, making sure the unit is well tethered in case the mount fails.
Looking forward to the pics.

Re: Garmin 2610 mounting
Been there - done that - won't do it again! Pretty hard to juggle the GPS and control the bike at the same time! I stuck it on before leaving for St. Ignace, MI and it came loose on the way home. Not much more than 1000 miles life and the scare it gave me is not worth trying anything like that again.
If you are worried about drilling holes in the cover, give Carl Leo a call and price a nice used one for replacement purposes.

Re: Garmin 2610 mounting
I mounted a Garmin StreetPilot III on the cruise control box of my VXII with a dashboard mount and a permanent adhesive disk from Garmin. It never fell off in the 2 years that I used it. Of course I did have it tethered to the handlebars just in case. Really inexpensive. https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=8022

Re: Garmin 2610 mounting
I didn't hard wire mine because I also used the unit in my car. I used a cigarette lighter plug on my bike for power. I have a Garmin 2820 hardwired in now. It is a real easy 2 wire installation to the battery or hot wire and a ground.

Re: Garmin 2610 mounting
I have a Garmin Quest which is on a RAM mount for which I drilled holes into the cruise control hump. After all, it's my bike. I bought a replacement hump in the event I need it in the future. I also hard wired mine at the fuse box which was relatively easy. So go for it; it can be done.

Re: Garmin 2610 mounting
Well, here are the pix I promised several days ago...
The GPS mount in place on the Cruise Control hump. Hmmm. Looks like I need to pull the hump and reposition a mounting gasket!
GPS mounted and ready to go...
Next step (after I finish moving CB, etc. from my '99 to this bike) is to bury the XM antenna inside the front of the fairing and hard wire the power. Then I hope to take a piece of that plastic wire covering (loom?) and bundle the power, XM antenna, and cassette adapter cable all together so it looks half way decent.

Re: Garmin 2610 mounting
Mike ,
Nice setup. Is the GPS set up for voice thru the XII intercom system or ???
BTW Are those Johar grips? Loved mine but could'nt find a replacment set so I went with the Kurakyn ISOs...
(ISOs look good but I liked the feel of the Johar much better)
Thanks for the Pics...

Re: Garmin 2610 mounting
Tony,
The GPS will be integrated thru a cassette adapter - at least that is the plan. I looked at modules that would integrate it into the system but the cost was going to be about $200 by the time I got done. Since I don't have much more than that in the refurb 2730 I decided $10 or $15 for an adapter made a lot more sense (cents?). I don't own any cassette tapes any more so the adapter should not be a big deal - except for routing the wire coming from it.
No idea what brand the grips are since they were on the bike when I picked it up. You are right that they are very comfortable though. I have Kuryakyn grips on the '99 but they will go with the bike since they are glued on.

Just did a quick Google and found the following info on Johar:
