No Lights

Post by Nathan (South Carolina) »

I have a friend with a 2003 VXII who says that when he started his bike a couple of days ago, he had no lights. Has anyone ever experienced this problem? He also said that this has also happened while riding the bike. I suspect that a wire may be loose on the ignition switch. Any suggestions?

Which lights? Dash illumination? Dash indicators? Running lights? Brake lights? Headlight?

Or all of them?

Might be (may not be also) the famous "tie wrap" along the left frame under the faux tank. Mine broke an ignition wire and it was less than two inches from the ignition, so the repair was fun. Cut the tie wrap closest to the triple-tree and slowly wiggle the wires to determine if/which wire has internal damage.

I had a chance to look at his bike today and all lights are working. We could not duplicate the problem. We wiggled all of the wires to the ignition and found them all to be good. Not sure what caused the original problem.

When I first got my bike (8 years ago) I had lots of problems with the lights. It was the main wiring harness past the fuse block, out to the rest of the bike. The connector works lose, the wires arc and burn.

This drove me crazy for a while, as the lights would be working one time and not another. Sometimes I would start a ride with lights working, and someone would tell me later I had no lights.
