Aux Fuel Tank

Post by Stargazer »

Hey folks, I have posted a few times about installing an Aux Fuel Tank and if anyone had ever done so before. Never did get any real replies back. Reckon there is not much interest in it. After all the XII does have a 6.1 gal fuel tank and gets very good mileage. But I wanted to extend the range during some of my long distance rides. I have just completed the installation of a Tour Tank 3.5 gallon aux fuel tank and have it tapped into the main fuel tank. Gave it a trial run this past weekend and it seems to function as intended. Next month I will be giving it the ultimate test when I go on another IBA ride in Florida. I have some pictures to post if anyone is interested. The only draw back is I mounted in the tour trunk and it takes up most of that space but it is quickly able to be removed.

So, how many hours / miles will you be able to go before stopping? Do you use a pilots refief tube? ;-)

To answer the three questions:
1) I will work on the pictures...and let ya know when I have them posted

2) I estimate two ranges,,,first at flower sniffing mode - 480 miles max, second at super slab speed - 360 miles max. No relief tube, so yes I will have to stop long before my bike has to for gas. It was pretty much that way before too. :-)

3) Planning on participating in the IBA Jacksonville Bike Week Party Gator 1000. Did the Legends Ride last year along with a BB1500 to Key West. Wanted to do a BBG but settled for a BB. Also did a SS1000 in Georgia that I called a RAG - Ride Around Georgia and then a TWIG - Tour the World In Georgia. Last year with a faulty Low Fuel Sensor (did not know it was bad) I stretched my fuel just a little too far and ran out. Then got bad gas from a good Samaritan that cost me 4 hours on the Legends Ride. Plus I have done just about every possible farkle I can think of to my Voyager and the Aux Fuel Tank was/is about the last thing on the list. With the Aux Fuel tank I hope fuel management becomes less critical for me on a long distance ride. And I have a riding bud on a Beemer whose range was always greater then mine so it was my 'short range' that always dictated when we stopped for fuel. Not any more.

That's a nice looking tank and installation. I was wondering how the tank is vented for fuel flow. Are there going to be any fumes in the tour pack or did I miss something?

If you look at the pictures of the tank again you will notice a black hose just below the gas filler cap. That is the vent line and it goes outside of the tour trunk thru a hole I drilled, routed by the license plate and then down between the RH hard bag and the rear fender. Works good. There is some residual smell in the trunk area but it is faint and not too bad in my opinion but yes there is some gas smell.

Yah Stargazer, I have no idea what I thought that hose was when I saw it. The only obvious answer was a vent. Senility comes easy in my family I guess. :bat: At any rate it's still a good looking installation. Hope the volume of the tank doesn't out last the volume of your kidneys. Good luck with it...........Gator Mike
