Hope someone with a 1700 will give you an answer, but I have done many trailer hook-ups and on most any MC tying into the brake lite & signal lite wires is the easiest way to go. You will need to get a MC trailer wiring adapter kit at any auto store or Walmart, "Hoppy" is a good one. Motorcycle turn signals and brake lites are wired separately than a auto ,that is why you need a adapter ,All the wires on the adapter are labeled and it is basically plug & play. One hint to make it a easy install is get a Napa pn#784387 tap connector kit. It has a wrap around the wire connector that makes it into a female blade connector & comes with the male blade connector to put on the trailer adapter kit wire so you just plug it in which makes installation very easy and can be removed just as easy, never had a problem with these connectors. If you can, go to a LED light set up for your trailer, it makes very little draw on your electrical system so you will not need relays if you want more lighting. Hope this helps, e-mail me if you have any questions..

Not sure who you got your hitch from, but I got mine from McHitch and they also sell an isolator. It wires into your existing system and uses some type of relay to turn on the trailer lights. That also takes the load off the wiring on the bike. I tied into the wiring under the passenger seat.
It took a little longer, but I stripped the insulation back and soldered the new wiring to the existing wiring on the bike rather than the type of connector that you buy from auto parts stores. This makes a better connection.
