Yet another radio question, Haven't seen it covered here.
Here's a new one I think. The right side speakers only work part of the time, most of the time not, bumps don't seem to matter, they just work then they don't. Any ideas where to start or has anybody seen this before? I have tried to check what connectors I could find. Should I just rewire all my speakers?

Does the same thing happen with both front and back? Have you tried it with a headset?

Re: Yet another radio question, Haven't seen it covered here.
This will help isolate the problem to either the radio or the right speaker. Easier to track down the problem after you isolate it to a specific item/area. If you've found a plug for the right speaker, a (semi) quick way to determine if the right speaker is the problem is to connect the speaker to another sound source such as a boom-box or small stereo using jumper wires with alligator clips or such. If the speaker works, then the problem is "upstream" of the speaker.Neal wrote:Does the same thing happen with both front and back? Have you tried it with a headset?

Re: Yet another radio question, Haven't seen it covered here.
Jim.. Looked at your post.. You say right side speakers, plural..
That tends to help narrow things down..
Does it do the same on the headset?
If it does, then we are looking at the radio..
If it doesnt, then we are looking at the fader or the amp under the right fairing or the long cable that runs from the back of the radio round to the Amp and its associate sockets.
Take the headlight out and you should be able to get to the cables to jiggle them and a long stick to probe round the amp.
The fader will need the fairing off..
Hopefully its not the Radio as its not the easiest to pull.
Both are capable of the fault.. The Fader due to weather exposure and wear... The Amp, though rarer, due to dry joints..
Let us know what you find.
Pete

I don't have a headset Pete, and have jiggled wires and didn't seem to help. Can the fader be "jumped" in any way. And yes it is both speakers on that side.

Re: Yet another radio question, Haven't seen it covered here.
Hi jim. .. Yes it can be done. There is a plug on both sides of the fader however they can't be directly plugged into each other.
There will be some manual Jumpering to be done.. I'm going to try and send you a pic with the colours etc.. If you can't see what's what, let me know ..I'm in my iPad and can't upload directly from it to the forum.

Re: Yet another radio question, Haven't seen it covered here.
Thanks Pete, this will be very helpful. Going to look into this this week and may call you if I get in over my head. But first I have the scrape the coat of Love Bugs off the front of the bike that I got yesterday. lol. Thats one of the disadvantages of living in Fla. this time of year. but at least the windshield keeps them out of my digestive system.

Hey Pete, Didnt get into it much this weekend but I did discover that if I put my ear down to the speaker there is a faint hiss noise. Does that tell us anything?

Re: Yet another radio question, Haven't seen it covered here.
... yes..
It means that hopefully the final stage of the power amp is working which tends to rule out the power amp though not 100% . It still means the signal is being interrupted before it gets to that stage.. It could still be a bad joint in the power amp.. Tapping that with a hammer and a screwdriver to save the plastic trays, may show it up when you get a mo.
I'm still favouring the fader or cables from the radio..
IF you can get the fault to reproduce, then if you have a speaker with two wires attached, you can poke them into the headset socket and listen to see if the audio is coming out.. You will have to hit the HS switch.
Hmm.. just noticed, we haven't explored the Tape deck.. Does it go intermittent when playing a tape or playing a MP3 back via a cassette adapter?
If it is good on the tape but intermittent on the the radio, then we have isolated it to the radio.
Another thing... When/if it happens, tap the HS button and tap it again to bring the audio back to the speakers. If the right comes back , double check it again when it next happens.. That will prove the radio is at fault.
It may be a good idea anyway to "clean" the relays by tapping the HS button, the tape/radio , mute buttons, AM/FM buttons several times.. they all have, apart from the mute, relays attached..
There is a couple of relays in the radio that may cause this but its more likely to be either a broken cable in the radio or again a dry joint (more rare).

Re: Yet another radio question, Haven't seen it covered here.
Don't know Pete, only used the tape player once for a couple mins the see if it works and it does, don't have many tapes anymore so when I get off work tonight Ill stick one in and check it out. Been wanting to play with my MP3 anyway so this looks like a good time to do it. I know that pushing the tape button on the bars dont make a diff. because that's how I check the time as I am riding. Someday your going to get a radio from me just to change that. lol Now lets see, where is that old Sonny and Cher tape?

Re: Yet another radio question, Haven't seen it covered here.
Lol.. know what you mean.. I have Steppenwolf, Madonna, Enya, Duran Duran, Seal and several other oldies but goodies.. Still have a dual cassette dubbing machine too ..
Hmm..
A Cassette "swapping" (ahem) session...
I think I'll be taking my radio out of the '86 soon to replace the belts.. so I'll take some hi res pics and perhaps videos like they have on the Burgman site.. The Videos are actually up on youtube and he , in the "boring" bits speeds it up and subtitles it with torque settings etc..
If you want, call me Jim up till midnight EST when you are ready..
Cheers..

Re: Yet another radio question, Haven't seen it covered here.
Ok It seems to be working now, did what Pete said and started pushing buttons in and out, and after messing with the mute button the left side was playing, called Pete and he said to put a little WD40 in the switch. I took it for a ride and looked for the bumps and manhole covers this time and she was still singing to me when I pulled into the driveway,It has never work right for that long before, I guess the next few days will tell.
