MP3 Mod for the Voyager XII Radio & LCD color change pics
Ok.. Last night I looked at the front panel as a whole on the test bed
I managed to squeeze a 3.5mm (1/8" in old money) stereo socket between the HS button and the Cassette flap.. Its a very tight squeeze.
While it was all apart, I also took out the grains of wheat bulbs inside the LCD display and replaced them with Tri Colour LEDs and their associated resistors to limit the voltage and current else the LEDS will pop..
I did blow the green section of one accidentally so the Pic with the Green display is only list one side..
The Camera doesnt really give it justice but its an Idea.. Btw the time on the clock is actual.. Zzzzzzzz (thud)
Couple of pics at the end show the Jack socket and my Ipod Touch plugged in.
One important note here.: The Cassette amplifier circuit is noisy in that there is a degree of background hiss always present. You dont notice it on the Tape because there is a mute circuit till the tape is inserted and music plays.. With a MP3 player mod I have had to disable the mute circuit so there is a little hiss till the music plays. This would primarily be noticed on headphones at slow speed when no music is playing. Also if the input was used for GPS .. Slight hiss till instructions.. However, several GPS's are also mp3 players and some are "connected" to the web too.. That would help eliminate the quiet spells..

OK,
How serious of a job is it to remove the radio? I had "Cool Vanilla" stripped down to absolutely nothing to repaint it, but I never even thought about removing the radio two years ago when I did it.
Now I am thinking I would like to ship off my radio to have some "mods" done to it.

The radio does not come out the way you would think it comes out, but is it doable with patients and information. there are many little items you have to address, Wireing, tag each connector as you disconnect them, The plugs are all different so you cannot plug wrong one in, but there are duplicate connections for the CB that may confuse you when you put it back together. There are brackets on the speakers and radio that need to come apart in the right order. There are 2 little rubber hangar brackets on each side of the radio that will most likely be bad that can be repaired with silicone it is hard to explain and I do not know of a written-up "How-to" It would be helpful if you could find someone close that has done it before or to talk you thru it by phone as you go. There is more than one way to do it but the easiest way is the best way. Contact Carl Leo and maybe he has some suggestions that would make it a easier job. Once you do it and can remember how you did it it is not that bad. E-mail myself or others if you have any questions .

I think I will wait until I take a long look at the bike and make a decision about it. There was another post about the adapter that goes into the antennea that I will look into also.

I had Pete install the mp3 socket onto my radio. Best thing I have done to the bike. Excellent job. Was the radio removal and installation a pain in the a?? Yep, but my music sure is nice. Thanks Pete

Re: MP3 Mod for the Voyager XII Radio pics
:-).. you are very welcome Bobby.. Many thanks..
Come the warmer weather I'll try and take some more pics or make a small video and post it on YouTube or something on how to take the Radio out..
Its not easy to see by any means..
Once you "see" how its done, it makes life so much more simple.. well thats the idea
If any one knows to a source of little rubber stoppers to go into the 1/8th (3.5mm) jack sockets, then please let me know..

Re: MP3 Mod for the Voyager XII Radio pics
I would like to hook up an XM radio and maybe even a CD player through my voyager radio so it would work through the speakers and intercom. Any suggestions? I have a spare voyager radio to experiment with.

Re: MP3 Mod for the Voyager XII Radio pics
Most of us use a cassette tape adapter or an fm modulator to listen to XM radio through the Voyager's stereo system. All of the functions of the intercom are retained because it is like playing a cassette tape through the stereo. With the fm modulator, the only disadvantage that I have seen is that you may have to change the preset radio station on the modulator if that station is used for normal broadcasting as you travel through different cities.jaynes wrote:I would like to hook up an XM radio and maybe even a CD player through my voyager radio so it would work through the speakers and intercom. Re: MP3 Mod for the Voyager XII Radio & LCD color change pics
Yes you too can Tan at night
Had a little bit of fun tonight.. I had bought some Ultra Violet Purple LEDS to see how it would look behind the LCD..
Not quite as I had expected..
While the LEDS are definitely UV, they dont really have sufficient visiblle light to be a good backlight.. I took a pic but the camera doesnt like UV too much..
Cheers..
