Adding a 12 volt accessory outlet

Post by Wayne and Karen »

I'm adding an accessory outlet for a GPS. Any recommendations on how or where to hook up the wiring? I know I've got to have an inline fuse but I'm not certain exactly what to do.

Hi guys,
I just did this a couple of weeks ago so we could plug in our GPS. Because I would use the GPS only when Dorothy is along, I attached the accessory outlet to the front of the trunk (left side), in the vicinity of where she plugs in her headset. I wired in to the accessory leads right behind the passenger seat (I believe the white wire is Pos and the Black/yellow wire is Neg). This is already a fused 10 amp circuit. Hope this helps.

Here is where I put mine. It is a tight fit and you better drill the hole correctly but it fit quite nice.

Before adding the CB, I made a plate that goes where the display goes. (under the flipup cover)
has room for the pwr outlet & a lighted rocker switch.. 8-)
All is held in place with the stock screws and you can still use the flipup cover... ;-)

PM me if you want pics..

I have an accessory plug attached to a 6 inch general purpose platform that I purchased from Cyclegadgets.com. I purchased the accessory plug from Radio Shack and have it mounted on the bottom of the general purpose platform with the gps mounted to the platform using a ram ball mount. The entire unit is mounted to the handlebars using a handlebar ram mount from Cycle Gadgets.

I used the same location as a preveous post the flip up door on the left side of the fairing. I just used a fused wire to the positive side of the battery and grounded it to the frame just behind the steering head. Really straight forward, and I don't do this stuff to often.
