Looking to replace your speakers for the XII? On sale, at..
Folks.. Best Buy have the 4" Pioneers on offer at the moment at $31.99 a pair down from $49
and the more sensitive 3 way (yes 3 way) Kenwood 4" down at $29.99 a pair..
I have Pioneers fitted to front and rear on the '94 and I am impressed and I bought a pair of the kenwood's to fit on the '86 hopefully in the next two days or so.. I should be able to do a direct comparison to the Pioneers..
The other makes I did have my eye on were a 4" pair from Clarion and the 4" Kicker's
Please remember that at 4" Bass is not going to be good but it is tighter.. The mid range and top end are, for want of a better word, cleaner or crisper with detail that the stock speakers tend to muddle..
Im still looking at alternatives for a passive or active bass speaker or boost.. There is an interesting little filter that was fitted on the 1300's and I have the diagram for that.. We'll see..
Im also looing more closely at a Bluetooth add in for the radios that will hopefully plug into the headphone cable and connect to a bluetooth helmet or add on like the Blinc M1 or M2. The issue there is powering/charging it. I may be able to phantom some power up a wire but knowing the feedback squeal issues, that may be a non started and I may need to just wire directly to the harness.
The alternative is installing it inside the radio as everything needed is there..
Cheers..
Pete

Re: Looking to replace your speakers for the XII? On sale, at..
Will do.. I started to fit them last night after changing the rear tire and shocks on the '86..
The 86 has stock speakers at the moment, with no speakers at the rear which was the norm. I find that although they are loud enough, they lack that clarity in the mid and top end and at speed, they become a blur of sound.. Much like listening to an AM radio station.. ..
I fitted the Pioneer TS-G1043 front and rear to the '94 and the difference was very noticeable. I tend to cruise at 60-70 on the interstate and they are very listenable to.. A little less sensitive than the stock speakers meaning you have to turn up the volume slightly on the radio outer right knob to more like 2pm or 3pm (Upper maximum volume) and the handlebar level up a bit when at a standstill.
Will fit the Kenwoods tonight and try and take it for a run either tonight or tomorrow.
cheers,,
Pete

Re: Looking to replace your speakers for the XII? On sale, at..
Fitted the Kenwoods in the 86 last night.. .Initial thoughts were not as good as I has expected especially as they were "3 way". Bass at lower volume was there but much tighter giving the impression that there was less of it.. I had the '94 with the Pioneers running along side and switching between the two, there is a definite difference.. At lower volumes, I PERSONALLY prefer the Pioneers..
Driving the kenwoods harder (turning up the wick) while stationary, caused the kenwoods to come into their own.. The Radio doesnt have a Loudness button per say (looks like I need to dig out the processors diagram again and go search for an option on the martix) which, in a conventional radio, boosts the frequency response curve at the top and bottom of the range.. As you crank up the wick, the effect of the Loudness button is decreased and the speakers become more efficient at reproducing whats being thrown at them.
On the Road.. not bad at all.. at 35 up , the auto volume increase came on song and so did the speakers.. The 86 doesnt have any losses through the fader so the amp dumps 100% though to them.. I had to turn the outer right knob up a little more than the stock , but they handled the volume well.. Bass was not bad for a 4" speaker and the top end was pretty good both on NPR news and pop music..
Not at all bad...
Overall verdict... While they are on sale.. they are good value.. I would NOT pay the normal $49 for them.. However. with the Pioneers on sale at $2 more or so, I would still go for the Pioneers and would STILL pay $49 for them too, BUT I would look on Amazon and ebay to get a better deal than $49.. Ive seen them in the low $30 online..
Cheers.. And boy, is it nice out there today.. :-)

Pete, do you have model numbers for these speakers? I found these Pioneer TS-G1043R on Amazon for $19/pair plus shipping, refurb ($11 shipping) and new-open box ($5 shipping.) Are these the ones?

Those are the Pioneer ones... yes... :-)..
Clarion and Kicker also make 4" speakers.. The Kickers are supposed to have a better bass response but on paper they are all much of a muchness..
The Pioneers need a little more power than the Kenwoods as they are only 88dB as against the 90dB but like I said, to my ear, i prefer the Pioneers overall..
I think Pioneer has just come out with a TS-G1044 now as well.. But they need some ooomph to drive them from what I remember seeing about them.
Cheers...

Re: Looking to replace your speakers for the XII? On sale,
Hi Folks!
Like the sound (pun) of both of those speakers, although I'd probably go for the Pioneers if I can find them here in Europe that is...
Hoe ever being an all weather/all year rider ( yes even in snow...) I am certainly interested in rain/weather proof speakers or at least how to, or is that over kill?
Regards Steve

Re: Looking to replace your speakers for the XII? On sale,
I have been looking into options on speakers for a little while and I have had a few people tell me about Polk marine speakers. DXi5250 in the front and DB351 in the rear. The DXi are 5 1/4" and the DB are 3". These are true marine grade speakers. I don't know if there is enough room for a 5 1/4" speaker in the front. Do any of you have any information on these? They are pricey but didn't know if anyone knew anything about them to see if they are actually worth the price? I have also been told to check into Crutchfield marine speakers. Any info would be appreciated.

Re: Looking to replace your speakers for the XII? On sale,
both front and rear speakers are 4" speakers and can not be modified to fit larger speakers. I used these Pioneer 3 way speakers and they sound much better than stock

G1044R's installed. I eliminated the rear box and speakers all together. I'm liking the 1044's. More clarity it seems. $25/pr on ebay

Re: Looking to replace your speakers for the XII? On sale,
New speakers these days are not paper. All marine speakers have a connection wiring points that holds up to moisture better. You'll be fine.
