Has anyone had fuel filter issues?

Thanks, still new to servicing the XII so wasn't sure if that route would work. I will give it a try just as soon as I have time. I bought the G2 fram, but will look to see if JD is available at reasonable distance.


Other topic: I was riding with 3 other bikes last month and one had a pair of auxiliary lites that were that blue/white look. They were easy to pick out of the traffic behind me. Power is an issue, but I was thinking of a pair for my wife's VN800a Vulcan mounted on her highway bars. She usually rides following and it would make it easier to see where she is when she gets behind (just got a pair of Sena Bluetooth setups so that will greatly help also).
She disappeared a couple of weeks ago as we were approaching home and had last seen her just before I got off the freeway. I thought sure she had gone down as i couldn't think of where else she would have disappeared to. After frantic circling around down freeway and back, turns out there was a backstreet route (longer time) that she took when the light at the offramp had let me get ahead of her. No harm other than my nerves, but she had left her phone and keys at home so couldn't even call me or let herself into the house.
it was either the Sena's or sell the bikes, can't take that anymore (not the first time she has suddenly not been there behind me. Tried basic CB setup, but her bike is too loud (she likes that V-twin sound though).
Anyway, wondered about inexpensive light setup is all. I don't think her Vulcan can handle more than LED's though. Just askin.

Changing the filter is not hard. Take off the chrome cover on the left side of the bike behind the carbs. The filter and the fuel pump are there in front of the tank. A large set of forceps or long nose pliers make it easy to pull out. There should be plenty of tubing to allow you to pull it out of the clip. Remove the clips from the tubing, rotate the tubing back and forth and then pull them off the nipples on the filter. Remember to take notice of the arrow that shows direction of fuel flow and reinstall the new filter the same way.

I haven't done it yet but I have been looking at adding a filter between the pump & carbs. Just stands to reason cleaner fuel is better. I had problems with trash that had gotten past the primary filter & was in the pump. Had the carbs rebuilt by Carl Leo, installed myself & still had had problems. After many miles & not many kind words, it finally cleared up. I have looked at where to install & think you could have room where the orginal is, you just have to make sure no line are crimped. You would have to secure it with a zip tie probably to the OEM filter. There is room just not much. Can be done.

"Forceps" are to crimp gas line so you do not dump gas all over the place. (You must pinch off gas line while doing this change out or chance having one big dangerous mess!!!) Don't forget to inspect hoses to make sure they are still serviceable..!! Also before changing filter, drain carbs one at a time so you can tell which carb may have crap in it. Before you start on the project you might want to run some "Seafoam" through system to get rid of as much crap as possible before you go and put in a new fuel filter, then a week or so after, drain carbs again and check for crud, then check filter to see if it is getting dirty.

I changed the fuel filter on my "99 by removing the coolant reservoir,then ,the filter can then be removed used an angled needle nose plyers to loosen and slide the clamps away froom the filter,then hold the hoses while you twist the filter out of the hoses.The tank level is above the filter,so I planned my riding so I was about out of gas prior to the filter change ,then siphoned out the last of the gas.It is not as hard of a job as it looks like.
