K&N Air Filter

Post by veeger »

Anyone using the K&N in their 09-12 Voyager 1700? Not really looking for horsepower gains and don't want added intake/exhaust noise but it's reusable which is a plus. Does it filter as well? Does it void warranty?

Are you running a fuel programmer with the K&N and aftermarket exhaust? Do you have to oil them?

I got the K&N air filter from my dealer, and what a differernce. I now have about 7k on the K&N air filter, the inside of the pipes are now a light gray. They were black before. I haven't done anything to the jetting or richened the fuel system. My mileage is now in the middle 40's to the low 50's at 67 to 70 mph. Yes the filter came ready to install, preoiled.

Hey, Don...Low 50's on a V17?? That's my holy grail!! What's the mileage on your bike now? How much riding do you do 'at altitude' (over 4000' msl)? Mine isn't broken in yet, but I want to improve the gas mileage if I can.

Don is very lucky to see that mileage. My bike used to see a true 45 MPG when it was new, but after the ECU recall my mileage dropped to an average of around 38. I was hoping the major tune up I did would improve the mileage, but it hasn't.

I used to get in the mid 50s on the Voyager XII, but that was because I dawdled everywhere I went and never rode above 55. Once I got used to the the bike the mileage dropped to about 46.

Shoot, my only bike that gets above 50 is the KLX250S!

I've seen a high of 58 mpg on the V 1700 . I have averaged 54 MPG's while travelling unhurried at 55 MPH on secondary roads. Usually average 38 MPG to 42 MPG's on the superslab. Have gotten a low of 31 MPG's running at speed on the superslab. Best I've ever done on a touring bike is 65 MPG on a BMW K1200LT while riding in North Carolina. Don is trully lucky to see those results at those speeds. Of course we all know he is riding the prototype ECU on his :oh:

Well guys the party,s over, in the last couple of months I haven't be able to get better then 44 mpg no matter how I ride. Pulled the K & N out yesterday and cleaned it. It was dirty, I could still see some daylight through it. Also thinking of changing spark plugs, it's not pulling as hard as it did and the plugs now have 31k on them. Maybe the winter gas? Seems like all I see is 38 to 39 mpg, but I'm sure having fun letting the V-twin rev out.

I just cleaned my K&N air filter, it had only been 6k since the last service. But with my mpg in the high 30's I started looking, the K&N was dirty so cleaned and oiled and went for a ride. MPG was up to the mid 40's, installed new spark plugs yesterday, engine starts much quicker or doesn't have to turn over as much. It's raining today so tomorrow I'll go pick up some parts for the Voyager and give it a 150 mile ride and see if I can get back into the high 40's or maybe the low 50's. Starting to get ready for the AVA Rally in Logan.
