Got'er Home

Post by 96desertXII »

Went down and did the deal today!

Took it for a test ride............things I noticed.

The fuel gauge goes maxed out (the low fuel light works)and the temp gauge barely moves
It has a choppy idle and a HORRIBLE off idle stumble and I smell gas when it idles
When asked........it hauls butt
the radio, tape, and CB seem to work, but there is no display on the radio
It is VERY DIRTY and will take me a week to get clean
I did not test the cruise, but all the handlebar controls seem to work
Did I say how DIRTY it is
Needs a new rear tire and the front is about 30%
Both driver and passenger seat are trashed
Lots of rattles and things that are loose
Windshield is toast, could cut it down for summer use.
Brakes work well

Congratulations on your "new" ride. If I'm understanding you the fuel gage stays maxed out and that could be a short in the wiring. If the wire going to the sending unit is shorted out you will get a max reading. I would remove the wire at the sending unit and see it the gage drops to empty. This should tell you if the wire is shorted or the sending unit is bad. As for the temp problem, some XIIs have had temp reading problems and adding a ground wire to the thermostat housing helps that. Thermostat housing also has the temp sensor on it. The gas smell and stumbling, sounds like you might need some carb work. For the most part it sounds like you don't have any real problems. Hope you get them straightend out soon cause it's great riding weather now. Welcome to the forum..........Gator Mike

Run some Seafoam in the gas for a few tanks, 1 ounce per gallon.
Check the carb sync to.

He said when he got it, it sat outside for awhile and was a little gummed up from not running. That was 15K ago, but they never did anything with the carbs. Also the remote idle adjuster just spins and has no effect on the bike.

Boys, boys.....boys the best combo is the one in your driveway! With one exception and that would be the combo that has me on the bike riding along side smiling to beat all! :gig:

Let's see, :hmm: my combo would be Kawasaki XII , Kawasaki XII, Kawasaki XII, then a Kawasaki Vulcan Nomad, followed by a Honda. :gig: Oh and a Pontiac. I need a bigger garage.
