Working on this at night (after 9:30 PM) is a little more difficult, but cooler temperature wise...... To date, wife and I get home from work at about 6:00 PM, have dinner, unwind a little, then head for the garage, where we work on the kit for an hour or so.. I am not hurrying to install this kit, I want it all done as perfectly as possible.

Note: All assembly performed using Craftsman inch-pound and foot-pound torque wrenches, all screws, bolts, and nuts torqued as per kit instruction sheet, or Kawasaki Shop manual if not noted on instruction sheet.

1. Installed all the engine seals (foam rubber and/or silicone like pre-formed seals that go directly on the engine, and radiator shroud, and permit the radiator shroud to butt-up and seal tightly to the cylinder head) It all fits perfectly! This appears to have been engineered to really seal well, I'm impressed.
2. Electrical added (new fuse box with spare fuses for rear blower motor, new resistor in potted package to protect from weather, new wiring looms with new weather tight plugs, it all just plugs together!)
3. Assembled and mounted new radiator - seals tight to engine noted in #1 above
4. Performed search and destroy on all visible phillips head screws, replaced with button head hex screws and washers where used to hold plastic bits on, Much easier to remove. In an earlier post, I stated using SS button head hex screws, but had my mind changed when I went to purchase same, store wanted $1.10 EACH for M6x1/2 inch screws. Black screws were 67 cents each, so used those instead. Still, much better than Phillips head screws.
5. Mounted new rear blower and housing using included starter motor mounting screws and new chrome bracket ( That chrome bracket is absolutely beautiful, it reflects the cylinder head fins, really adds to the beauty of the engine. New screws are included with red thread sealer on them already, a nice feature!)

Stuff to be done Today, Saturday, 9/1/2012

6. Button it all up today, re-install muffler, pipe covers, right saddle bag, left side cover, right lower fairing cover, right passenger foot board. Remember folks, I have a trike kit on my bike, you may not have to remove all this stuff if you're still riding a 2 wheeler.
7. Add Engine Ice - decided to wait until today, so I can more clearly see if any leaks.

After project plans:
1. Buy new warmer jacket, because all that heat WILL be gone
2. Ride

Re: KAMS kit for '09-'11 Voyagers SMOKE ON THE WATER

Post by hank43 »

SMOKE ON THE WATER

Thought that would grab your attention!

All assembled except the pipe shields, added Engine Ice, Started the engine and voila! More smoke than you would believe. All from the pipe wrap though. :gig:

Let run until temp gauge read one mark past 1/2 way, then both fans kicked on. :bowdn: Glad for that. Don't see any obvious water leaks, let it run a minute or so more, than shut off. Fans ran until the temp dropped back to the 1/2 way mark. Put my hands in the vicinity of the exhaust pipes, detected a small amount of heat, but nothing like before. Don't feel that hurricane blast of volcanic heat from the radiator anymore. Heat from rear cylinder is now directed downward. Functions as advertised!, and, I am now a certified KAMS installation expert.

By Jove, I think I've got it!

Any questions???

Congrats Hank! Now I am waiting for the first ride report before I decide to order mine.

Just got back from a three day ride with my wife and the temp guage never got past where the fan kicks on while passing through small towns (30 MPH with a couple lights). Mostly the temp guage hovered around 12:00.

Will do David, got a 330 mile ride coming up in a couple of weeks, plus, the real test - Driving to work in traffic. I have been avoiding that, because riding in traffic on 95-100 degree days just ain't fun. I don't really expect this kit to resolve all problems, but do expect it to be a cooler ride with the KAMS-Pipe-Wrap-Engine Ice trio. Will let you all know.

DanH;
My kit came complete with front and rear parts, so installed all. Have done a few 100 miles since install, seems to be better as far as blowing heat up at you from the radiator, but temp gauge shows no difference. I also don't see any difference in heat from wrapping the pipes, and adding the engine ice, temp gauge is still the same.

Question: What are the new front heat shields, and the new radiator for? don't see any difference between the old and new, same with new radiator hoses, but I changed out everything anyway. Guess I got spares now, huh?

The mounting tabs for the radiator should be different. It is pushed forward a little to make room for the heat shield (shroud) between the radiator and front cylinder.

My KAMS Kit follow-up after 1500 miles. I didn't add Engine Ice, but still run conventional coolant.

I had the KAMS kit installed last September, but I really didn't have a chance to evaluate whether it was cooler or not until this past weekend -a 300 mile run in 90 - 100 degree temps. The additional fan on the left and new radiator & fan assembly really have shifted the heat around for me. I don't carry a passanger, so can't evaluate how it works for the back.

The temperature gauge still opens as usual, so the engine is just as hot, but the heat is greatly reduced at the side and the ride is definietly cooler on the legs.

Bottom line - I'm glad I spent the money, as it was well worth it for me.
