oil leak

Post by tbrooks56 »

I need some help .Last year i developed an oil leak which after checking on this site zeroed in on the water pump.I have an 03 voyager my brother has an 02 . his bike developed the same leak. The oil is right below the water pump drips just enough to go down to the exhaust and some drops on my left bag this is all after a long ride 100 miles or so .We did my brothers water pump last year he has no leaks did mine the same time still have leak .This is good clean oil .Not like its coming from rear.I have done the rebuild twice still leaks. The only thing different that I did with mine is use what you call parker lube which is made for O Rings .I purchased another rebuild kit from Carl want to try again but this time no lube on O Ring.Planning a trip to Oregon would like to put this to bed .This is not a lot of oil but just enough to make mess .Hope some of you guys out there can help . I want to say again this is clean oil. Will thank you in advance.

How much oil are you using and are you pulling both drain plugs when you drain ? Only use 3qts 22oz of oil with a filter change, don't even worry about the site glass. It is common for them to leak there if it is over filled, also it can cause the lifters to tap by foaming the oil and air getting into the lifters. When draining the the oil there is a total of 3 things to pull, 2 plugs and the filter. I'm thinking that Carl would have explained this but I'll throw it out there too.

Terry,
I hate it when something gets fixed, then appears to have failed a second time. There's another possibility. It could be the seal on your clutch slave cylinder. I knew better, but overfilled my vxii a few years ago. A few days into the trip & developed quite a mess. Wasn't using much oil, but sure looked bad. Carl Leo fixed me right up. When you rebuilt the water pump did you check for side play in the shaft? Let us know what you find.

Redid the water pump today.went bad stripped out the water pump bolt hole .Had to retap hole and fixed that .But I discovered something that i didnt know there is a drain hose for an oil reservoir that needs to be drain every year. When i pulled the plug out a lot of oil came out.The hose lays right where the oil would show up on my pipe .So maybe it was this drain hose not the pump all this time . Need to get a nice long ride in to test this out .Also there was no clamp on the plug either . Has anyone else ever had this problem? Will be checking this hose every year from now on. Hoping to help someone else out with this

Terry, if your oil leakage is that far back where that catch tank hose is your leakage is possibly coming from rear final drive. You can do a simple test to check for that. Look in right ahead of where the swing arm pivots. (you may have to pull that water pump cover for easy access) There is a large rubber boot connecting swing arm to engine. With the engine cool try reaching back in there with a finger and stick your finger inside front side of rubber boot. Run your finger down the inside of boot and see if the tip of your finger picks up any oil. Pull out your finger and if you got some oil smell it. Does it smell like hypoid gear oil? If you don't know what that smells like get some for comparison. If you got gear oil here its from rear end drive, don't panic. You probably have a broken o-ring on rear end drive coupling. And if this all checks out to be gear oil let me know and I'll tell you how to fix it. Its not to hard if its the rearward o-ring.

I think mountainman is on the right track. Especially if you are finding oil near the drain hose. I think the drain hose you found is fuel and not oil related. Do you have a factory manual?

Found one oring that was just floating around up by the engine. It cost 2 hundred to fix. Took bike to Ohio has stayed dry of oil so far.I think problem is solved. Water pump has an oil seal as well... ;-)

I did the same in replacing O-rings at first, filled to 3 qts 22oz, still small oil drip on bottom water pump mounting bolt... Hmmm, pull off pump small oil drain hole... Hmmm, turns out the oil seal is on a different parts diagram other than the water pump.... Go figure... :tho:

Anyhoot, repalced oil seal at the time of starter clutch replacement... No leaks!
