new here AND new voyager owner

Post by virgorabbit »

Hello all, as you read in the subject line, I'm new. I just picked up my '86 xii and trailer (same color....nice) across the board even trade for my '06 Honda vtx!! Any how....I would like to run the rotella oil in my engine, but am confused...is it 5w 40 or 15w 40 that I'm looking for? Also, has any one tried "engine ice" brand antifreeze? Thanks in advance! Bob

Hey Bob.

Traded your '06 for a 20 year older bike even? OK. You must have had a lot of miles on it.

Anyway, welcome to the AVA forum. The XII doesn't need engine ice, but you are welcome to use it. Just make sure you follow the instructions on flushing the radiator.

Make sure you have the replacement ignitor in that '86. I don't know the numbers but someone will post them soon I'm sure.

The T6 is synthetic (not really, a highly refined Type III oil, but it behaves as if it were a Type IV, which is good enough for me...), 5W-40. The T is conventional, 15W-40. It is superb oil, rated for M/C's by JASO, rated SN for cars. Change it, and the filter, every Fall, unless you put over 5,000 miles on it -- then change them again, to be safe. Cheers!

Bob,
I would consider your climate when choosing the weight of an oil. In Iowa, I would think the 10W-30 or 40 would be better. I know some have even run 20W 50 and had no problems, but that seemed to heavy for the climate I ride in which would be similiar to yours. As far as ignitor information, you can find that on this page along with a lot of other Voyager XII information.

No, the VTX only had 7700 miles on her, but some of the things I needed to consider was 1) the pass. seat was very narrow making the old lady's' a$$ hurt after 30 miles of riding. 2) I wanted a windshield for those long trips up to Canada 3) I wanted a radio 4) had cheaply made soft bags on VTX which leaked 5) The str8 rally bars sucked on long trips. KBB valued my bike at 4000(trade in) and the dealer wanted 5000 for the XII and I now have a trailer. I figured after buying a good seat, windshield, and radio, I'd be spending at least 1000-1300.....so now I have a nice classic bike with all the things I wanted!

Post up a pic when you get a chance. What brand trailer did it come with?

Welcome aboard!

Concerning the igniters, 1248 is the good igniter, 1179 is the bad one. Lift the fake tank and follow the wires to see the igniter. It will be stinciled on the top (usually the 1248 is easy to read but the 1179 is difficult to read).

Here's a photo of an 1179. Note it is difficult to read the numbers.

The 1179 igniters have a tendency to break the starter chain ($$$$) when trying to start the bike with a less than fully charged battery. Unscrupulous sellers on eBay will wipe off all of the numbers of 1179 igniters then not disclose that they are the 1179 and tell you they will fit all years of the XII (technically true!)

The trailer that came with it is a 1996 Starlight, painted the same color even.
