Mezzerschmitt of Messerschmitt (not sure of the spelling)

Post by Scott-(Altoona, PA) »

We went to a summer/Polish festival at one of the local communities and as we were walking through the car show section I spotted a Mezzerschmitt. Just like the one from Fast & Loud without the Evel Knievel stripes.
As I'm talking to the owner my wife rounds the corner and realizes that she works with the fellow. He also owns an Amphicar and a Jet-fuselage motorcycle (claims it gets 80-100 MPG with a Yammy 400).

One stopped in the 60s at a service station when I was getting gas. First thought I had was, it must be scary driving next to an 18 wheeler and seeing the bottom of the transmission. :gig: He did say it got great gas milage but in the 60s who cared?............Gator Mike

Mezzerschmitt of Messerschmitt (not sure of the spelling)

Post by Scott-(Altoona, PA) »

I believe he said it had a 191 cc engine in it, 4 speeds forward and reverse (just set polarity before starting motor for direction). When he showed us the motor I laughed out loud, all I could think of was I rode up here on a 1200 and this thing has about 1,000 less cc's. He admitted that it is hilarious the size of the engine. But in post-war Germany they needed something small and economical.

It's a beautiful vehicle - no really! All right, you got me - I lied.

I remember seeing them for sale back in Ireland when I was a teenager, but I don't ever remember seeing any on the road. Always thought I'd like to try one out.

Friend of mine had one back in England in the 70's or 80's..
198cc Sachs single cylinder, two stroke motor.. Early ones were 175cc.. And yes, 4 forward or 4 reverse... Lever in the cockpit to move the stator plate that held the contact breaker to move the timing "Before or after TDC"
Driving at speed that close to the ground was hairy to say the least.. :-)..

Now look up Peel P50..
Once you have, the see if you can see..

British Top Gear program test drove one.. with the normal consequences.. ;-)

Cheers..

So,where do you get a P-50? It does not look terribly stable ,but it looks like a lot of fun :hmm: Thanx for the reference. :gig:
