Safety First

Post by suzib6sw »

We have just been visiting a friend of ours who was unfortunately involved in an accident over the weekend riding her bike.
Details about exactly how it happened are a little sketchy, but suffice it to say, she had a close encounter of the road kind and face planted.
She lost 6 teeth, has a broken nose, black eyes and opened up her chin.

While she was wearing all the "Proper" clothing, she was wearing an open face brain bucket type helmet.
Although she is physically ok and mending quickly, it only went to confirm my preference for open face or flip up helmets especially as one had saved my jaw from serious damage in England many years ago..
The other point that came out while we were talking, was her medical insurance was unlikely to cover dental damage due to the accident so please do not waive the medical insurance on your vehicle insurance.. Her 6 teeth will cost upwards of 20K to fix..

Folks , I realize that the heat of certain states makes it hard to wear bulky suits and clothing but there are options including jeans that have good padding in all the right places..
Oh, and flip flops and Tennis /trainers are not an option.. Ankles and feet have very little skin to protect our bones..

cheers ..
Pete

Good reminders about FF helmet and proper clothes...Regarding jeans with good padding: Draggin Jeans Co. http://www.dragginjeans.com/ makes both Kevlar padded jeans and a Kevlar pants liner... I have both, and yes it is a bit uncomfortable on a hot day, but I really feel unprotected without it... Two catagories of riders....1) those that have kissed the pavement and 2) those that will kiss the pavement...I fell into the first catagory many years ago and learned my lesson about proper gear...(gives me the creeps everytime I see a catagory 2 rider rider with a tee shirt, shorts, tennis shoes , etc...)

Lafayette is a college town and I can tell the squids who've never laid a bike down. I see them all the time mostly riding sport bikes wearing shorts, tank tops and sneakers without socks on. Yeah they have the right helmets but I don't know if I'd want my brain intact after I'd lost that much skin. I have to admit I have not worn my full face helmet in a while but I need to get back to that. I have broken my nose and split my upper lip before wearing an open faced helmet back in 2000.
