E 10 10 Percent Ethanol In Gas

Post by lockwoodjohn »

Hi Everyone,
I was reading on the AMA web sight about the raising of the percentage of ethanol
in the gas we have to use in our bikes. How the AMA is opposing to increasing the amount of
ethanol because of the dangers to our motors. What I would like to know is there any where you can get ethanol free gas in NY or Pa. Does using the products that are suppose to counter
act the effects of ethanol really work or am I just wasting my time. I think I either read somewhere on this site or owners manual that the Voyager does not like ethanol and should
not run fuels with it in it. How to we get around the addition of ethanol in the gas we use?

Please, Glad To Have Any Input, Thanks.....

The 10% Ethanol in gas weather it is 87 or 93 octane is fine to run in anything. But the problem comes when you are not using the machine for a period of time, say, over 2mo +. storage. It starts to collect condensation in the gas because it has alcohol in it. which tends to break down the gas and congeal which can plug up the fuel system. The Gov wants to increase the amt of ethanol in the gas we use which will than become a much bigger problem than it is now. Using non-ethanol is kinda pia as it is not available everywhere and is much more expensive. The additive also cost extra and are ok to use but you have to monitor the use of them. And they are not going to be the cure all for the more ethanol in the gas. The best solution for now is to use only the 10% ethanol and for storage use the addtives while putting in non-ethanol gas, if you can find it. imho. Draining the system can also be done but I think the chance of corrosion would be very high. All is caused by our political system :dm:

My owner's manual warns against ethanol gas. I tried a StarTron additive (blue-green color, made for curing ethanol ills, or so they claim): was expensive; was a real pain to add to every fill-up; planned a long trip, which would have required carrying too many bottles of the stuff as I wasn't sure I could find it everywhere we went -- gave up, didn't use it after that (used two bottles, maybe two months, then none...). Haven't had a fuel issue in four years of using 10% (ONLY) Ethanol gas. Can only find one pump, locally, that has 100% gasoline, 0% ethanol -- no guarantees for finding such on the road, on trips; too much hassle to map them out, and only ride where I could possibly get such.

I moth-ball my bike for 5-6 months, every Winter. I add SeaFoam, as per directions, to the fuel, top it off to eliminate air space where condensation could occur. Four years, and counting: no fuel/carb issues. YMMV. Cheers!
