Front forks oil level ?

Hello gentlemen

I have another question - how much should I pour oil into the front forks?

Service manual says: 391 mm or 160 mm,
Manual supplement says: 336 ml of 177 mm.

I note that the front forks completely dismantled.

Gery, go to Voyager tech tips, it tells you the amount of oil to put in and how far down the fork tube it should be. ( 140 MM if I remember correctly) the guy I got my bike from had progressive springs put in, I checked the air, ( have read since then that you don't need any air in these) oil came out in my gauge, I'm thinking mine has to much oil in them so I have to do some playing with this. That should read 391 ML above in your quote..

But best way to do it after you replace all bad parts is to fill with 391ml & pump shocks up & down untill all chambers are full with oil and then with forks compressed measure from the top of the tube down to the oil level and add or take out oil so the oil level is 140 mm from the top of the tube. This is for replacing with stock springs. Progressive will take less oil so the measurment would be 145mm from top of shock tube. Use 15wt or less shock oil. depending or the ride you want. 10wt or less soft ride in front, 15wt firm ride in front, to much oil shock will not go up or down, very stiff ride. Did you measure the amount of oil you drained out of each shock? That will help you decide on how much you need to put in by the ride you had before.

Steve do: Getting oil out of the air valve does not mean you have to much oil in the shocks, When we put progressive shocks in we have to remove a filter and spacer to make room for the progressive shocks, so now without the filter the oil will come out the shock air valve if you run air in them. No big deal. You do not have to put any air in the progressive system anyway if you do not want to. But it is always good to check all the fluid levels in a MC that you purchase.

Thanks Doug, It seems like the bike picks up every little bump, Very little cushion. I looked at the forks going down the road, they do go up and down, it's just very stiff. That's another reason I was concerned, liquid doesn't compress. Thanks!!!!

Thanks for all the suggestions. But ...

I wanted to be sure. Why in the forum in the tech tips oil level in the front forks are 140 mm - more than a given service manual 160 mm.

Does it effect your experience? whether this affects on better guidance of motorcycle?

I just put Racetech springs with cartridge emulators in my forks with the oil level 160mm from top with forks compressed emulators in spring and preload spacer out.
For the stock springs I would use the measurement that is in the tech section That number comes from people that ride voyagers and determent that was the best measurement to use.
The way I get the oil level is with a vacuum pump.
I have a tube made with a stop on it that I can adjust.
Fill the fork tubes above the level you want set the stop on the tube to the measurement you want then suck the oil out until it sucks air.
this method makes both fork tubes the same level.
