wind screen issue

Post by Rich C »

Good evening AVA. I have an 86 IIX in very good shape. It is my 1st bike and love it.
My Question is this, is there a way to cut about 1.5" off the top. Can this be done?
Who can do it? The reason is I can't see over the top in rain. I live in Fl, it rains a lot. This is my daily driver I have put 30K on it this first year

Any advice?

First off welcome to the AVA! Maybe a auto class shop might be able
To help you. I tried to cut off about two inches off of my shield, Did not make out very good. Ended up cracking windshield. Had to get a new one. Only two inches shorter.
Good luck, Hope you can get it lowered

I'm sure someone who has cut a windshield will chime in. The original Voyager XII windshield is made of Lexan which is thinner than aftermarket windshields. I presume it can be cut but you need to take precautions. You need to make a template of where you want to cut, pull the windshield off and have someplace you can place it without scratching it. Once you know where to cut use a permanent marker to mark off where you want it cut, use some masking tape to tape over that section on both sides of the plastic. This will keep you from damaging the windshield if the saw slips. I have seen folks use a variable speed jig saw to cut, with a fine tooth blade. cut slow and only through the taped off areas. Once it is cut you can use some fine grit sandpaper to smooth off around the edges. Remove the tape and it should be fine.

I cut my stock windshield about 4 or 5 years ago (have since replaced it with a 22" (2" shorter than stock) windshield from Cee Baileys.) I did it with the windshield on the bike. Covered the top section with masking tape, both sides, marked the line with a "magic marker," and cut with my "saber" saw using a fine tooth metal cutting blade. Worked great but I never polished the edge for a finished, professional look, just sanded it smooth.

I cut one down also, Taped it off to protect it and marked with a pencil where I wanted the cut, Then cut it about 1/8" longer then the line.
I think I used a 4-1/2" angle grinder with a cutoff wheel.
Then I worked it down to the line with a floor model belt sander and put the radius on the edge at the same time.

Congratulations on your purchase of a VXII. :perfect10: I bought one almost 5 years ago and am very pleased with it,but I still have only had time to put 25000 miles on it :cry2: I would suggest you either have,or install the 1248 igniter, the 1197can make you unhappy.

The 1248 is the one you want, the one you don't want is actually 1179 or no visible # at all
