Fairing repair
I removed my fairing a couple days ago to pull the radio out for modifications. At least two of the lower tabs where broken off. Can I just superglue them into place then back the break with fiberglass?
Everything was holding fine and no rattles but I would prefer to have all anchor points intact.
Thanks

I have found that JB Weld does a much better job. Rough up the unfinished surface for better adhesion. Use the JB to glue the two pieces back together, let cure, then mix another batch and build up the back side of the tab to restore strength. A piece or two of fiberglass wouldn't hurt, but coat it with JB instead of fiberglass resin.

Re: Fairing repair
I used to use fiberglass cloth, with resin, to repair the cracks in the fairing of my GS1100GK,and was satisfied with the results but JB Weld may work even better,I never thought about trying it.

Re: Fairing repair
There are some tabs completely missing on my bodywork. Since I ride year round its hard to down it for the repairs.

Re: Fairing repair
I wish I had that problem!
Here in South Dakota there is no shortage of "too damn cold" months to ride. Taking advantage of todays 45 and working on both the Voyager and the XS11.

Re: Fairing repair
LOL.....I really have to make some time for it. I have a small coolant leak, the carbs need to be rebuilt, fuel gauge isn't working, and my temp gauge is wacked. Maybe after the move.Tat2demon wrote:I wish I had that problem!

Re: Fairing repair
I've used plumber's ABS pipe glue (black ABS plastic suspended in a solvent -- when the solvent evaporates, only the ABS plastic is left behind), along with the prep chemical to be used prior to applying the ABS glue. It has worked quite well, both on my '93 Voyager, my late 70's Vindicator fairing, and a QuickSilver fairing, both made by Vetter Corporation, back in the day. Cheers!

Re: Fairing repair
I'm a composites "expert" having built several airplanes. What I found works really well is CA+ thick superglue, Zip Kicker and fine hobby fiberglass. First glue the two or more pieces together with the superglue. Now rough up the backside of the joint and surrounding area. Lay on a ply of class cut on the bias. Wet out with the CA, then zap it.

Re: Fairing repair
I used Plastifix to repair cracke in a ZG1000 fairing and the Rifle windshield base. Over 2 years and everything was still holding. I'm thinking the V fairing is ABS? Mine has a few missing pieces I'm looking to fix and figured the same technique would work.

Re: Fairing repair
The faring plastic on both bikes is ABS.

Re: Fairing repair
Found some awesome stuff at the auto parts store.. Permatex PermaWeld black plastic epoxy. I broke a tit off of one of my side covers (the chrome one). I was trying to figure out how to fix it (drill a hole in the middle and epoxy a toothpick in) and ran out of time. Epoxied it on with this stuff and it's held without any problems!!!! Get some and keep it in your tool box.
