18 watt LED running lights

Post by Tonyvdb »

Picked up a couple 18 Watt Cree LED lights and mounted them on the front crash bars. They really work well and are a little bright for night time use but after aiming them down slightly they seem good.

I bought a set of these off Ebay back in October and they are Great!! Bright and draw no current unlike the halogen lights they replaced.

They are rated at 1,200 lumens actual output, which is quite a lot! I went with a pair of 3W / 100 Lumen LED's, strictly for conspicuity during daylight rides. I've seen them working at night (finally, we avoid nighttime riding as much as possible, due to the increased risks), and they only light up the ground out to around five feet in front of the lights, so 3W is not enough for nighttime illumination. I also paid $20 for the pair of 3W units, but that was around three years ago.

The real advantage, aside from illumination, and the miniscule amperage draw they make, is the triangle of light you have made with them, and your headlight. That triangle of light allows onlookers to accurately gauge your approach speed, just like a train locomotive.

Glad to see these, as they demonstrate the price is really dropping on LED's for motorcycle use. Also glad you aimed them down, as 2 x 1,200 Lumens would be quite blinding to oncoming traffic! A standard automotive headlight is rated around 700 Lumens! Cheers!

Look like they are great lights. Last time I put led running lights on I got really bad radio interference. Do you have any issues with radio interference?

To post the photo directly into your post, the coding should look like this. The info between the [ img ] tags came from Photobucket's "Direct" links:

Code: Select all

The pic showing the lights look good. Nice install.

How did you bracket them to your engine guards? I could not understand it because I cant see the bracket/mounting method. Sorry for all the questions...

OK, I see it now. Thanks. I just ordered Kuryakyn "P" brackets for the engine guard bars. They should work.
