Not sure if it's been address already, but if you remove the turn signal light, you can get to the back of the speaker to keep a hand on the pieces that the speaker screws go into, otherwise, you get to hear that famous "tink, tink, tink", as it drops down to la-la land in the great void inside the fairing.

....So as things turned out with the "speaker upgrade"...... I had only one service call to go do friday morning, home by lunchtime ,and...out to the garage I go, to install my new speakers in the XII.
mid 50's guy .....have removed and installed many stereos and speakers in a lifetime of vehicles, but had not removed speakers on a XII before...searched both forums for a thread on this subject and did not find one... so I decided to make a post on the forum ,asking others that may have done this change out before, for any" heads up" .I chose to start with the right side speaker removal.
(for no particular reason)

After a right side train wreck, I logged into the website, to see a response by Bill O, warning of hearing things falling down, then dis-appearing into the inner workings of the fairing.

Image

Here is a pic ,of what is a pair of "nut plates" that at the factory....are easily installed, and are secured or attached to the back side of the speaker housing by NOTHING (once the speaker screws are removed) they are more than happy to be affected by the properties of gravity ....and fall down into some unbelievable hiding places inside of the fairing.

Image

So I removed the four allen screws holding the speaker grills in place....then the 4 screws holding the speaker in place....... all going smoothly at this point..... thinking :hmm: ...I should have this done in minutes,,,,,when I removed the speaker, from it's resting place ,since it was put there at the factory, I heard just what Bill O (later to find out)... warned against happening ! yes ...stuff falling down inside of the fairing . realizing now ,,,this job will take more than minutes :-(

Next step was to remove the R.H turn signal, and get out the various forms of lighting devices...and long magnets, and start fishing  ......found, and got one in a few minutes.... but the other one did a un believable dis-appearing act ,that tested my patience ! here we go !!

Image

I knew in some way ...that I was gonna be punished for gettin off work early on a Friday.....So lets take the right side of the bike apart ....looking for a bracket !! Having a blast now !(sarcasm)
So at this point ....a familiar term, from another website's forum applies here( COG ) shoodabeen !
Image

A couple of dabs of silicone to the face side of the nut plates, and the screws installed......then removal of the L.H side turn signal to look inside and see the L.H side gold "nut plates" and a liberal dose of silicone on them , just where they sat, and left to dry overnight, was the plan.
Headed into the house, and found a response to my post (by Bill O) warning me against what just happened. OH WELL.... all's well that ends well ... :gig: after completing the job... and fired up my new Pioneer 3-way (frozen) speakers, I had to laugh, and wonder if it was all worth it ! ....tony :-D

I put the same speakers in last week. They sound great to me. Taking the bike apart allows me to clean and check things so its ready for summer.

.....Thanks J 7 Galo.......Things that should have been done at the factory , (when it's easy to do, this might have taken a extra few seconds on the assembly line, and costed nearly NOTHING to accomplish. Maybe this is yet ANOTHER reason why the price of a new Voyager XII,was far less than other touring bikes of the day.)
is'nt always done ! My/ (our) nut plates are there to stay ....for as many times that we may decide to change our speakers in the future.(easily)...............tony :-D

Hey Tony, I did the same speakers as you over the summer and found that they are much clearer than the originals. You wont hear much more low end but the vocals come through much better.

Did mine (put in the same Pioneers - Christmas present) last weekend. Sound great, but glad i pulled the fairings (just couldn't bend the fat fingers around enough). Found one of the Radiator mount nuts had loosened halfway (probably my bad when i changed the O'rings after Thanksgiving).
No problem at all with the fairings off.
Next, putting extensions under the trunk and removing the rear speakers (for their protection).
By the way, i've only driven the 4wheel cage once in over a week. Ain't Phoenix nice, till summer anyway. :devl :hot:
