IT SNOW FUN

Post by Lucasind »

All of the bikes are in hibernation for the winter. Up till about a week ago, we had a total of 14" of snow for this winter season, (WAY better than last year, had 80" last year ) was hoping to get thru winter with a minimal amount of snow fall. WISHFUL THINKING ! ! Currently I am running out of space to pile up more snow. I realize some places ,have had more ...and some less. Instead of spending my "free time" after work ,doing my M/C projects.... It's been ...break out the snow removal arsenal :cry2:

Image

As you can see... I made a makeshift snowplow out of a old fireplace mantle chunk of wood, cut some fork holes thru it ....and NO ,my forklifts don't even get a winter break :gig:

Image

It seems ...as soon as I get it down to cement again.... and go in the house for my 5th cup of coffee ,it's time to go out and start over again !

Image

After going all over town in my service truck... You see it there by the gate ,with a foot of snow ,still piled up on the roof ! Time to go back out and start over....got another 4" today......tony :-D

....Last Friday after work ,I started on the ZRX 1100 fuel tank gas gauge sending unit replacement...only to open up the box ,and find out that they ordered one for a ZX 1100.... big difference in the part ,with only the missing " R " in the middle of the model, had to return it,and re-order. So with the wood stove fired up in the shop ....the ZRX got put out into the forklift garage, and a M/C cover put over it. Didn't want to risk the presence of gas fumes being present inside the garage.

So.... How is winter going in your "neck of the woods" ? dyin to go riding here !........tony :-D

Tony, looks like you could use one of my monster blowers to blow that snow clean over into your neighbor's yard! Built on a 1956 JD 726 that I got from my late brother. Most of the spot welds were broken and the original 7hp engine seized on me after just one season. Too much full-throttle running, I guess. A new 18hp engine, all seams fully welded (both sides) and ground, driveline rebuilt and beefed up with out-rigger axle bearings, smaller pulley on the blower and larger on the engine for triple blower speed, and now it blows snow over the telephone pole next to my driveway without slowing down. Half throttle is actually best. Electric start, dual headlights for really early morning clearing so Cindy can get to work. Actually, I clear our really long drive and walks, then four of my neighbors' drives, then I widen the path cleared on the street by the city trucks. It's actually fun to run with that much power!

Look really close at the pix below. With that much power I just HAD to add a truck-stack for some bling! No, it's not the snow discharge chute! It's the actual exhaust stack. Guys stop several times daily when I am running it to ask where I got this thing. Two of them asked me to build them one until I tell them what it would cost!

Hmmm, now where could I put the radiator for a 1300 sixer? Five speeds! Interesting possibilities! Could maybe send the snow back up into the clouds?

Tony,I thought that was your motorcycle lift, not a fork lift. :gig: :corn: This winter has been too much of, :cold: no motorcycle riding ,and too much icey, snowy roads to suit me.It has not affected our work much,as we work in our repair shop all winter.

Tony, that's quite a pile of snow pushed up next to that van. You might consider getting all of your friends and family together and set up a pool on exactly when the last bit of it will melt away. The KC Star picks one of the biggest snow-piles pushed up by the trucks that clear parking lots, then they take bets on the exact day/hour/minute/second that it will completely disappear. They even get down with a magnifying glass to watch the last bit melt, and the winner is anybody within five seconds. Everybody puts in a buck to enter, just one entry/person, and the winner gets it all. Multiple winners have to split it. I have yet to find out just who it is that does the watching and makes the call.

A friend of mine near Chicago has about the same problem you have. His yard/drive is narrow with houses on either side. To get rid of his big pile of snow he shoves a PVC 2" pipe into the middle, then hooks it up loosely to the tailpipe on his pickup with a flex hose. Every morning he remotely starts the truck and lets it idle for 15 minutes before driving off. The flex line just slips off his truck as he drives off, and the exhaust heat melts the pile from the center, outward. A pile the size of yours would take maybe four days of this! Don't waste the heat! You paid for it at the pump!

I feel your pain, in an opposite way. Here's a webcam shot of our local ski area this morning. Looks like early November. :-( I haven't seen this situation since I started skiing in 1973. Snow base in February is typically 80" - 100". Sad, sad, sad. :cry2: It's unlikely now that winter will arrive here this year.

Someone could make more money than Bill Gates if he could just develop the technology of teleportation to a functional level. Think of all the transportation cost savings and POSSIBILITIES, like sending Tony's snow to Ron's slopes.

Ron, are the temps there low enough to support a base? No snow-making machines?

That's one of the problems - temps in the mountains have been low-mid 30s to uppper 40s. The other problem is the jet stream pushed all of the storms north then down the Rockies and east, skipping over the US west coast.

Well, temps at or near 60° the last few day, sunshine. Had some free time today and got out for a 90 mile ride, first of new year. Here's one of the local roads I like to ride:

Yes, it's about a month to a month and a half early for this kind of weather. As I said before, winter didn't come this year. . . . . .here in the Pacific NW anyway.
