I was changing the sparks plugs and I pulled the plug wire out of the cap on #3. I looked at the end of the cap and it appears as though it was designed to screw into the wire (is this correct?). I screwed the cap back into the wire and slid the boot down to hold it snug and put everything back together.
Now, when the bike is idling it seems to have an occasional pop. It's not consistent so I'm not sure if this would indicate an electrical miss or not. The bike seems to have the correct amount of power, I've tried lugging it in high gear as well as running the R's up to check top end. I'm pretty sure it would be a noticeable loss of power if I was running on 3 cylinders.
Any thoughts? Do you think that plug wire on #3 is still doing it's job?

Re: Plug wires and coils
If the ends of the wires are damaged you can trim about a 1/4" off and re-insert. These M/C's are getting old so the caps & wires may be leaking spark. To check the caps and wires a simple way is check them at night, get it as dark as you can and run & idle the XII and look closely at each wire and cap you may want to take battery tray out and extend battery cables to get a good look at the area of all plugs & wires. Also you can purchase a spark plug checker which shows you the voltage going to spark plugs by showing a light . Harbor frt $2.00. It is not real hard to change caps & wires. Just hard to get to the coils. Let us know what you find Good luck..

Don't be discouraged if you find that it is hard to change the wires - much less getting to the coils. Doug is more adept at this stuff than some of us.
