First Oil Change

Post by Godlover »

Okay - I just finished my first oil change and did it by the book. I was reading through some past forums on oil changes and someone mentioned the washer that goes between the spring and the filter. I didn't see one when I changed the oil and didn't know about it. I assume it is stuck to the old filter that is in my garbage can. I will check tomorrow. Is this something I need to be concerned with? If so, can I just drop the filter - install the washer and re-assemble. If I do this - how much oil does do I need to put back in? Boy, I'm full of questions!!

I will have to dig out the old filter and see if it is stuck to it....

I think that the washer is there to keep the spring from tearing the rubber grommet on the filter. I had the same arrangement on my 82 Honda 900 Custom and accidentally threw the washer away with the filter. It ran fine for 16 years without it.

I just learned of this washer... Just did an oil change myself,, It was not present....Also when you go to get a filter for the machine's engine from the dealer, you have to get the O rings separate. :dm: ...All my other bikes came with an O ring, I assumed they would be in the box, crud... next go around it will get the washer and the new O'rings. #671 and #670 A o ring and the washer is 92022...Gosh darn it... :gig: Image

Every filter I've gotten (Walmart or NAPA) the boxes have had both O rings in them. Check other boxes before you go to the counter and pay, it may be that some SOB lifted the O rings out of that box.

I've only used Napa filters in mine but always check before taking them home. My "local" store had one that was missing one of the o-rings as well. May have been sent from the factory without it but nonetheless I now check them out before I buy.

There are actually two different filter models: one with the O-rings, one without. My CB750, and my KZ440 both used the same filter as the XII, but I once grabbed the wrong filter, even though it was identical, sans O-rings... Had me worried, at first, but the bike ran fine with the old rings left in place. They looked to be slightly shrunken, but that was likely my paranoia coming through. Cheers!

I once forgot to replace that washer during an oil change and put the washer someplace safe and easy to find so I could reinstall it during the next oil. It was three more oil changes before I could find that darned washer! Sure enough, it was someplace where it should have been easy to find, I was just blind! Anyway, had no oil leaks or any other problems without that washer.

Both of the two local Wal-Marts near me still carry them, BUT they have moved them along with other motor-sports filters to the little area they call the Motorcycle section with helmets, gloves, goggles and such.
Next time you're in a Wallyworld look in that are, you might just find filters for bikes and ATV's hiding on a shelve there now!

Not all Wally worlds are the same. Some older ones don't have the shelf space, so pickins may be leaner there. Also they have these new smaller versions they call "Fresh Markets" or "Neighborhood Markets" (can't remember if that is correct, but they built one near us, but they rarely have what i need so i don't go there). Just sayin that not all have all the same stuff (or as much variety). I did notice that section mentioned just last week but didn't explore it because of time constraints.

Ken, if you get a chance to explore it don't blink - there isn't too much to it! I haven't come across any of the mini-WalMarts yet but I'm sure in time we'll have one or two planted here and there in PA also.
