A REASON TO CLEAN

Post by Lucasind »

Did ya ever notice that when ya get your seat, saddlebags and faux tank etc... off of your voyager you realize just how much road filth accumulates in all of those unseen places ?
After our Sunday ride, the local forecast here called for a drop in temps from the mid 60's ,to the mid 40's with rain every day :-( ....So there will be no riding this week. I decided to start cleaning my XII and the more I looked the less I liked what I saw. The affects of rock salt are everywhere, even though rarely exposed to it. I couldn't do a good clean up of the back area so off came the rear section of the exhaust system :

Image

Not liking the looks of this mess at all ! All of the fasteners came out o.k., but one clamp screw busted and will get replaced. The rust will be removed and the back sides of the chrome exhaust side covers will be primed and painted. You can see the bottom weld of the new progressive shocks
is already rusting,as well as the powder coating of the trailer hitch after only a short time.
These issues will be addressed also :

So as long as I have the bike this far apart for "cleaning" ,and the rear ct came in along with the front Dunlop E III..... let's have at it ! :hpdc: . I remember a post someone made ,sharing the procedure of laying a full dress goldwing on it's side to remove the rear wheel, and thought about doing that for a few minutes but decided against it,and grabbed a forklift instead.

Image

This only took a few minutes to throw a couple of straps on the bike and out comes the tire.
I remember other members that posted of difficulty getting the ct 's bead to seat on the rear rim,
so I left my new tires in the house near the heat, and off to the dealer I went to have the mounting and balancing done..... OUCH ! was charged one hour labor at $89.50 plus a $ 3.00 shop material fee ( that must have been for the slippery stuff  ) ... My son no longer works there, so NO price breaks 4 me :-( ......but I was told to come back in an hour and they would be ready ...as luck would have it ,there is a Frickers next door ,and made for a perfect place to pass the time

I asked the service manager when I returned,if the mounting of the ct went smoothly, and he said his tire guy said it beaded up no problem, so keeping the tire warm helped out.
Now tomorrow after work I can spend another evening out in the shop, listening to country western music ,and working on my motorcycle.......Ahh,,,life is good... :gig: ...........tony :-D

Oh my gosh, one more reason I'm glad I don't live in the Midwest/northeast! Salt! Corrosion! Snow! Ice!

....yeah Ron, even though I've been here, ALL my life... I am finding winters to be a big thought factor as to what you just stated. A friend of mine ,that I went thru AMI with ,back in the late 70's with, just flew up from Orlando to spend a week here with me ,to give me a good kick to the A$$....
sayin... move to FL. !!....while he was here ...all we could do is look at the bikes....cause the weather was not co-operating :dm: . moving.....is easier said than done !.....................tony :-D

But,if you moved to Florida, you would not get to spend all that time repairing rust, and corrosion. :rolling:  You would have to spend more time riding. :corn: I am surprised it looks that bad! :cry2: I am afraid to look at the bottom of my bike now :hmm:

....Oh yeah Loren..... I was told that a retired firefighter bought my bike new ...in your
"neck of the woods..." apparently a nine year old bike having only 12k miles on it(at trade in) did a whole lot of sitting around ! I was told that the left side "scuff" my XII sustained was the deal breaker ....when he fell over in the garage with it,causing minimal damage....but it led to me getting the very
UN-USED XII :-D .....an old saying goes....."the more you look..the more you find wrong" !
I'm not gonna get too carried away with this, right now......but I don't plan on buying any more bikes to re-do this year... :devl ....soooooo next winter....my XII should get my FULL attention !

Trust me ...if you look at,and remove , your exhaust....It will probably look as bad as mine !
....another old saying applies here...."out of site, out of mind" I'm the kind of guy that likes to look :gig:

I would prefer a little bit more north.Maybe around Kansas City.
Still gets hot but not nearly so hot and when it does snow it only lasts a couple days .the only thing you have to worry about is tornadoes.Had a freind move to California to get away from tornadoes-------Three days before that big quake that took out the highway

I have lived in several areas of Tx. I guess it really depends on what you are here for. Live in panhandle you have Colorada/New Mexico. Live in San Antonio area & you have the Hill country. Live in the Austin area or DFW/I35 corridor and you get lots of areas to explore. East Tx and of course, you get East Tx, Ar, La and on east. We do have weather but for the most part you can ride year round. If Carl can move, you can too.. just a thought
