Why do we do this?

Post by Littlebeaver »

Why? Why do we do the things we do? I have a idea, we like motorcycles and wrenching on them... It's a carry over from when we had bicycles as children... We would fix them up and paint them, put generators on them to have lights, or a piece of cardboard in the spokes to have that engine sound... We loved it then and now we still love it.. Except we are all grown men now,,, Well some of us anyway...LOL It's a hobby for me and it makes me happy... also it's a great social outlet for me and for others that have the same interest..... The learning process is tremendous... Not everyone knows everything so there's always something new to learn.. I learn stuff everyday still and I listen well too... So why do you do this? the bike thing... does it give you Joy? Like it did when we were so young...? I like an adventure...

....one of my college professors said.....(he was a ol 'farm boy....highly educated to doctorate)
" people do what they do,for one of two reasons"..."they want something they don't have,...or "they have something they don't want" I have not found that to be un-true....no matter WHAT I have ever tried to apply it to ! ................man, I miss that ol' farm boy since his passing.......his gentle ,kind demeanor , and endless words of wisdom ,are something that they don't make anymore. :-D

I still have a motorcycle today even though I don't get to ride it much. It seems natural to have one in my garage. I started riding when I was a kid at age 14. I had bicycles but they seemed to always get stolen or get run over because I left it in the driveway. I seldom wrenched on it because it was taboo to get into my father's toolbox for any reason. However my first motorbike though I got it new required an abnormal amount of work to keep it on the road. I had to buy my own tools to work on it because the ones that came with it were in a word pathetic. I learned how to change my own tires, adjust the chain, rebuild the front forks after a crash, even in the end, replace a cracked piston. After that it seemed normal to have a vehicle that required lots of maintenance to keep it road worthy. It actually felt odd when I got my first car that I had a vehicle that did not require constant attention. Now days we take for granted how reliable products have become. The motorcycle somehow keeps us grounded in reality.

Part of the reason I like to ride, is to feel the wind, the throttle response[my cages are a 4-cylinder Focus and Ford Ranger which are built without throttle response],and as a gearhead I feel more connected with the bike than in the cages.I also feel more free on the bike than in my car or ranger.Another point is that I cannot repair the fuel injection on the cages either. My Ranger has developed an extremely inconsistent misfire, making it impossible for my repair shop to diagnose as it has not done it for them. :tho:

As an ex-engineer I am constantly trying to improve things, and a bike gives me that chance to make things better without a huge outlay of cash. It provides me the mechanically artistic expression I need, just as some people sculpt or paint on canvas. Somebody says they want a better gear ratio for their bike, and nobody can come up with a bolt-on aftermarket solution, so I say, "Why not?". Hence, the Hondasaki drive.

Oh, just so much stuff to be developed to make our bikes better, and so little time!
