How best to stay cool in the heat?
So I've got a mesh jacket and open face 3/4 helmet and in the last few days it's been in the low 90s (32c) and it's almost too hot to ride even with the jacket unzipped.
What do you guys use in the heat that still keeps you protected?

Google Cooling Vests , take your pick and wear it under your mesh jacket.

you will find that on a real hot day the mesh jacket will be cooler then not wearing the jacket.

Stay hydrated - I have a cup holder mounted to the handlebars.
Baker Air Wings help some.
I am a devout ATGATT rider and frankly when it gets 90F or above the bike simply stays in the garage and I use my Ford Escape for all travel with the A/C blasting. It is just too distracting for me to be over-heated and focusing on that rather than the road and traffic.

Down here in Louisiana if we parked it when it gets 90F we would only ride three months a year

Re: How best to stay cool in the heat?
I have a full mesh jacket and also a textile jacket with just vents and zippered sleeves. To be honest; as many of the long distance riders will confirm, the jacket with the vents will actually keep you cooler in really hot temps...provided you are MOVING. The full mesh is okay up to around 90 but anything above that and I wear the textile with the vents. These (LD Comfort sleeves) also help but I think they are a lot more efficient in areas with lower humidity. I use them from time to time and they do cool you down pretty good...

Come to Texas. Ride for 2 days, then go back to Alberta to appreciate how cool it is up there. Nah, get the cool vest mentioned in the 1st 2 responses.Skibou wrote:Or you could try visiting Ontario!![]()

Re: How best to stay cool in the heat?
My wife has a cloth tube full of some weird granules that absorb many times their weight in water, she ties this around her neck and is a lot more comfortable in hot weather. We too have the mesh jackets and drink LOTS AND LOTS of liquid when on a ride.
ATGATT is good.......

Re: How best to stay cool in the heat?
Phoenix Arizona - need I say more.
Mesh Jacket with the cooling vest. I have the textile with vents, but haven't tried it with the cooling vest yet. 1/2 helmets are nice up to a point, but then over 100f the full face starts to protect your face (and the eyes) from the blast furnace). Last year Indio, CA to Phoenix in six hours and up to 108f (hills in-between would drop back to 90f-ish for a little while). Lots of water mixed in with the electrolite drinks (like Gatoraide) as water can leach out minerals and you don't realize how much fluid and salt you are sweating when going 60+ mph. You need to force yourself to drink more than you feel like to keep up.
In Portland, OR right now but heading back next week via California central valley. Cooling vests will get a workout.
Enjoy,
Ken

Re: How best to stay cool in the heat?
An old biker trick is to soak your shirt with water in the bathroom when you gas up. Wear your jacket over the shirt and open zippers to regulate the cooling. If you are on the highway your shirt will be pretty much dry by the next fuel stop. A cheap and effective way of keeping your cool in 90+ highway travel days.
